Would you buy gear that someone died using?

I've been saving to buy my tech gear, and as it turns out, an excellent deal has shown up. It's everything I need, the exact gear I want, the price is right, but the guy who owned it pulled out his reg, bolted from 200+ ft. and died on the surface. I won't say who/where/when out of respect for people here who may have known him.

It wasn't a gear malfunction as it was tested by the coasties and cleared, the guy just panicked. I know someone who was on the dive at the time, so again, I know the gear didn't malfunction.

The question is, would you feel right diving in a rig someone died using? It'll all need to be serviced/cleaned, but I don't think there's any bad juju associated with it. I'd be taking everything but the harness which is too small.

I would have no problem with it.

Used to have some climbing gear that came from a similar source.

Perhaps you should avail yourself of the services of a regulator and BCD exorcist.

But seriously, just have the gear inspected thoroughly by a tech. The usual caveats apply here as with any used gear.

Unless you are planning on making the same mistakes, why would you not buy the gear, if it is what you want at a good price?

I would have no issues, everything I want, at a great price and tech gear to boot. It's win-win situation. Jump on it.

I'd say go for it. It has the added benefit of serving as a constant reminder that people are not infallible and to stay within your comfort and training.

The gear sounds good. The rest really depends on how YOU feel about it. Feeling comfortable underwater is really the key.

I also bought some climbing gear like that from a friend who died - in my eyes I was doing him a small service by keeping his spirit climbing . So because I had huge respect for the guy, his gear boosted my confidence, the purchase helped his family and over all it felt great to climb his gear.

But again it depends on how YOU feel - no reason to feel weird but if you do, it's best not to shrug off a creepy feeling before you plunge down deep - just to save a dime.

Get it blessed first or whatever is appropriate for how you swing spiritually.

It would weird me out until I had enough dives in it that it felt like "my" gear but it wouldn't stop me from diving with it. I inherited my uncle's gear when he died and I dove with it for years. At first it didn't feel like mine but after a while it did.

As for bad mojo. I wouldn't be concerned about that in the least.
