Arriving Labor Day, with a week to dive. Staying in Wailea. Husband 100+ dives, I have about 25, recent diving (yesterday in Catalina). Prefer small group, have an easier time if boat has a ladder (;-) and don't care too much about the food on board. Nitrox okay but not a requirement. Would like to take photos (budding photographer) and take my time looking at interesting marine life, not interested in an overly aggressive dive profile, don't need to go deep for the sake of going deep...I can be as happy at 35 as I am at 90 depending on the health of the reef and the variety of marine life. Want a knowledgeable guide who can show me all the cool stuff. Heard great things about Ed Robinson on this board, also Mike Severns, based on research, those two and ProDiver seem to suit our personality but haven't heard much about ProDiver. Learned from this board that there are better dives than the wall at Molokini, so not wed to a particular place, happy to let the knowledgeable captain and crew choose for us. Heard Lanai is great diving, but sounds like it would be a long trip for us as we are staying in Wailea. Would appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks!

You came to the right place. Welcome to SCUBABOARD. Maui has great diving and you're gonna love it. I had 4 unreal dives today. Each one rocked so much I don't even know which one I liked the best. The underwater sunset was pretty hard to beat and then the night dive...damn....

You won't go wrong booking with any of the 3 you mentioned. Pick one and go for it...or if you're diving more than one or two days, book a day with all 3 and decide which ones meets YOUR needs.

As far as Lanai is concerned, it is worth the effort to drive to Lahaina to catch a boat IMO.

given you're talking only a week away, not to mention a holiday week, I'd start by contacting them now and make sure who has room before spending a lot of time picking one. Maybe it won't be a problem, but maybe it will.

Thanks for the advice about getting them booked...silly me, thinking tourism was down, and it was the week after labor day so I thought there would not be a space problem. Better start calling/emailing. Any other comments whether all three would fit our personality? Is there a reason people don't mention ProDiver in the same category as the other two?

Great board..thanks!

I just got back from Wailea yesterday -- another choice is B&B, which I did my dives with all 3 days. Extremely happy with them -- this is the second year I've gone out with them. Their boat has a ladder. (There are boats without ladders? How the heck do you get back in then?)

They get going quite early, which I actually really like.

Try to stay on topic

I highly recommend Mike Severns Diving for South Maui. I think the Cathedrals off Lanai are among the top 10 tourist dives in Hawaii, but then again I would think that :)

To further answer your question about who might be a match for you, my husband is also an UW photographer and we always dive with Ed Robinson's. We have always found their DMs to be excellent at critter spotting, and do a great job of not hurrying the group, allowing my husband to always get his pictures. They're also really great about asking people for specific requests, and to dive their own profile within their own needs and comfort zones. It isn't unusual for us to decide to dive shallower than the planned profile and a quick talk with the DM to tell them of our plans is all it takes.

I've gone three separate years with ProDiver and have had a great experience every time. They're usually one of the first out of the harbor which is also nice. The DIs (and the captain) are top-notch and give you tons of information and the right level of freedom and/or attentiveness freedom depending on your skill and comfort level. I like smaller boats so have always gone that direction. I haven't been with Severns or Ed Robinson, though they are both well-regarded.
