Guys i think i may have a problem on my first two dives after cert i dove the Mighty O the Oriskany. I know thats an advanced dive, my DM knew me and my instructor well and they knew i could do it, well anyway. My first two dives were to the ship and i saw a whale shark on both dives. There in lies my problem where do i go from here? I dove the next day and it just wasnt the same lol.

Well, imo it really depends on why you got into diving. Do you expect to always see something unique like a whale shark? Because of course that isn't going to happen.

Everyone is different of course, but I think you really have to love diving for diving's sake and not just what you might see. My first dive was in Jamaica. It was beautiful. I did my cert dives at Ft Picken's Jetties. Visibility was pretty bad, but still loved seeing the Sheepshead, pin fish (bait fish as most people consider them), urchins and a lot of other common fish. I did get lucky and see a small octopus, but I'd have enjoyed the dive even if I hadn't.

The next time I dive, it'll be in a quarry. I'll see blue gill, catfish and some trout. But I will love every minute of it just the same. You have to decide what you enjoy about diving and gear your dives toward that.

Enjoy the experience, it is amazing in itself even if you don't see a whale shark or a carrier )

Wow. That's a tough first dive to beat. Who did you go out with? I had some friends out with the H2O Below on that same day.

I went with Jeff Folds on Daltons boat i dont remember the name
i was being just slightly sarcastic i loved every minute of it and even enjoyed Vortex springs the next day though not nearly as exciting
i cant wait to get back into the water even if its a quarry or spring im looking forward to doing alot of rig diving and am drooling at the thought of the Blue Hole in oct and the atolls of Belieze
i think its contagious because even my wife is really excited about going and shes just finishing up her classes

Good grief!!! it took me 10 years and thousands of dives before I saw my first whale shark!

It was magic - proper pure magic, but there are hundreds of thousands of wonderful things to see under the ocean. Having cleaner shrimp dance over your fingers pretty special, and if sharks are your thing then whale sharks are awesome, but until you've come face to face with some of the bigger predators, you ain't seen nothing yet.

It's a big wide ocean - there's a lot more to see - you're a very lucky diver!

I hope the rest of your diving career is as exciting!

Cheers,

C.

Yeah, you're spoiled. Of course there is the caribbean, SE asia, mexican caves, etc....lots more to see. Think of your experience as a good sign of things to come.

I hate you, you lucky b******. :p

There was a whale shark sighting on my OW trip but I missed it.

Make sure you see the Sardine Run!
