not to raise this post from the dead but i just finished reading it and i just have to say ive sent maybe a dozen people here in nyc to get certified and WITHOUT EXCEPTION they get pressured into buying some no name crappy product for twice the price of brand name from leisurepro so spare me the BS about business ethics on LP's part. they offer product for cheaper and that helps bring SCUBA to more people and thats a good thing. if LDS's cant compete then they will die, welcome to the free market (or what used to be the free market). Indian valley scuba is obviously one of the shops that will survive with their smart practices but unfortunately i have never been in a dive center like that in 10 years of diving here in NYC.

Hey Zaf,

Thanks for the vote of confidence! We do plan to survive, and in fact, we'd welcome those refererrals you speak of! We are just below Dutch Springs, and have an on-site dorm where our out-of-town students can stay, free of charge! How's that for service plus?

In any case, no selling here, we just want to make the experience for others as great as it is for us. If divers are having fun and diving, and you respect them as you should in every way, including product recommendations and prices you charge, then they don't wander.

It's all good.

Our shop is 25 miles south from Dutch, so quite convenient to get to for anyone heading to Dutch Springs. We look forward to seeing you there. Just to keep things fresh, we alternate between setting up on the Student Side and Peninsula area, but will be on the student side this coming weekend. Look for the big tent, big trailers, and big fun.

Hope to see you there!

I will never buy anything from these folks ever again. They changed the price midday.

I called this morning to get an item with a few add ons. The add ons needed to be price checked. I sent the email exactly like they said to. Each item (2) took four hours to get a response. When I called back this afternoon to order. The price was higher than this morning. I explained that I have the printed page in front of me and they must have changed the site within the hour. They of course had no knowledge of this. He then put me on hold for to long and came back with a different offer. He said he doesn't need this product I am doing this all for you. After spending thirty minutes or so on the phone trying to get this right I cancelled the order.

I'm done with this shop. I for one am voting with my wallet and hope others will to.

Just to add some paranoid FUD to this thread, LP could use browser cookies and your login to keep track of your habits in order to haggle with *you* personally. E.g. if you browse a product and don't buy it or remove it from your shopping cart, they could lower the price a bit the next time you visit in an effort to get you to pull the trigger. Conversely, if you always bought at the listed price, they would never lower it for you.

I'm not saying they or any other site actually does this, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. If I had an online store, I would. Disk space (for the customer data) is cheap.

I am, btw, a happy LP customer. They just sent me an RMA on a Bare wetsuit with a busted zipper.

Its fairly common for travel / airline sites to vary their prices by time, often taking into account where you are connecting from. They figure that people shopping for tickets in the middle of the day might buy them at a higher price than some one looking at 1am. Of course this is not true for every situation but it only has to let them catch a small percentage of the sales they would have lost at their higher business day prices to be profitable.

So sayeth my old Econ Prof. :)

While that may be something we accept in the relatively nameless & faceless airline reservation industry, it's not something that translates well into folks trying to work with a legitimate e-retailer and purchase a product. Changing prices, making deals, etc., all reek of early e-bay auction antics.

Work with a retailer who simply puts their best price up front, no gimmicks, no need to check back later for a better price, no need to "buy now". Our belief is this honest and straightforward approach yields the best long term relationships with our clients, greater quality referrals, and the least hassle, both for the consumer as well as our staff.

I can only at this point apologize - firstly for coming late to this thread, and secondly for the response you received from the member of the sales team you spoke to.

Our usual policy is that when a customer calls about a price increase within 1-2 days of the increase, that we honor the old price.

I would very much like the opportunity to investigate what went wrong, and why. If you would like to contact me directly with the date and time of your call, and the number you called from, we can trace who you spoke to, and take action as required.

Incidentally, we offer 60-day price protection, so if the item you have purchased reduces in price during the next 2 months or so, we will refund the difference.
