It is a sad day when someone requests something be "dumbed down" for them. I can understand "please help me with these calculations" or "I don't understand, can you help..." but really...."please dumb this down" ?!

Spoon-feeding the answers to you will only make things worse. This is 4th grade math and and maybe 9th grade science (gas laws).

No offense, but when people wonder why the agencies have dumbed their curriculum down to the point that rocks could pass it...this is why.

I liked the part where Jane was getting hot, can we go back to that? :D

Unfortunately, the only helpful answer for the OP I can think of is:
Ask your instructor or someone you know and like locally to work with you, in person, on it in the context of specific examples until it makes sense to you, and then practice it enough so that it becomes easy. If you can't do that, then maybe diving nitrox isn't for you.

You should re-read the forum title again.
What point does it serve to ridicule a new diver(s) asking a question? Besides, this thread will be read by more than just to OP, many brand new divers will benefit from the clear and simple explainations.

I agree.

Much of this is intimidating to people who have never done it before. Many people also have actual phobias to math stemming from some unfortunate classroom experiences. The OP chose to use a phrase that is commonly used today. Look at how many XXXX for Dummies books we have for just about everything imaginable.

:D Sorry about that distraction...I was only trying to reply as the OP requested in post #5.

While I absolutely agree that this is how our society is and has been going for years, I have to disagree in this minor instance. My instructor for EAn was anything but detailed. The quiz didn't go into too much depth on the math and more or less ensured we knew the tables. However, having read an thread just like this, I'm very comfortable figuring out my MOD on nitrox regardless of the %, determining PPO, etc.

Dave,

I agree with your statement that any question that's asked should be addressed in an intelligent and professional manner. The OP asks a valid question and it deserves a sincere attempt at answering it. The question she asked is not really a Basic question. That is not her fault. She simply asked it. It is really more of an Advanced question (given that it is more of a Nitrox/Mixed Gas question). Again, not her fault. Perhaps it should be moved to the Advanced section.

While I think that SparticleBrane may have been a bit harsh in the way he expressed his thoughts, I can understand his broader point. Perhaps it would be better discussed in a new thread. While I would not want to water down a topic, I would seek to make it more comprehendable to the person seeking to understand it. I think the OP just wants the information presented to her in a manner that makes it easier for her to make sense of it all. I respect that and it seems as if most of the folks who have posted here have tried to help. This may simply be a matter of language.

Jane is the oxygen part in the gas mixture.
Dick is the pressure. or ATA

The more Dick presses down on Jane the hotter she gets. Above 1.4 times the pressure Jane will starts getting hot and is not real happy about playing nice. Above 1.6 she is so hot she is afraid she will pass out.

:rofl3:

Oxygen is the fuel for the body, give it too much fuel, or not enough and it quits running. It has to have just the right amount to run efficiently. Below 0.20 the body starves. Above 1.6 it over revs and blows the motor.

This is so totally the right way to remember this Pressure and oxygen mixture! Great! Story telling :blinking: Thank you to everybody !! I love the Dick and Jane do Nitrox analogies! its easier to remember ! The light blub in my head is not so dim ! "getting brighter"

SparticleBrane;

I don't think the author really meant for the subject matter to be "dumbed down" in the sense that the end result would be a student of insufficient knowledge and skill.

What I think the author is asking is that the information be presented in a more analagous way so that it can provide a more "visible" image to the student.

I don't know if you've ever had the pleasure of sitting in an advanced mathematics or statistics class with a professor who just happens to be a pedantic PhD., but sometimes the instructor, because of his or her indepth knowledge of a subject, has no clue, whatsoever, as how to present the subject matter to the student in a comprehensible manner.
