Has anybody been to VA beach recently. I am looking to go diving April 4th when Lynnhaven goes to the tower and tug. Would this be a worthwhile dive this early in April.

Upton75,
I haven't had the chance to make a dive trip offshore yet this year, but the Tower Reef is a good choice. It's shallower than the Triangle Reef area and closer to shore (quicker ride). I have made a few fishing trips and a couple of ventures to side scan new wrecks so far this year.

For your trip next weekend, you'll want to wear gloves and a hood as the water's still quite cool. Although there's plenty of light on the bottom, bring a light to better explore the wreck and signal your dive buddy.

Write us a review when you get back, let us know how your dive trip went.

Safe diving,
Will

Upton,

Hope you have a drysuit or a semi dry, it's a cold dive this time of year. Other than that, it's a sweet dive. If you go with LDC I think Marc Sommers will be your captain. Great guy!

Anyone doing the EM Clark this summer or make a reccomendation. I have not called JT yet.

The Tower/Tug is a good dive for under 60 ft. and provides extended bottom time due to the shallow depth; plug into some nitrox and add even more bottom time. JimmyC is right-on, semi-dry or dry will provide the best protection from the cold, surface temp today is about 47 degrees.

My past experience has shown that the relatively "in-shore" dives this early in the season provide for poor visibility. You have to keep in mind a couple of things, tidal flow; incoming tide will wash the water and provide additional visibility; outgoing tide will carry everything out of the bay and tends to decrease visibility.

Weather conditions several days prior to the trip can also affect your dive. Remember the Chesapeake Bay forms from several states to the north, these states provide run-off into the bay from rain and snow melts this time of year. The result of this will cause "Poor" visibility. The further off-shore you go the less impact the run-off has on visibility. I suggest a wreck reel along with Will's recommendation of a light, this makes for a good point of referance and a quick asend to the anchor line and surface.

Have fun and let us know how it goes. For real time weather (surface conditions and water temp) visit my web site Pelican Dive Charter and click on the Buoy Data button, then on buoy 44099 box.

I was with JT , at Beneath the Sea this past weekend & there was someone trying to get a Clark trip up, but the guy was pretty drunk & being an arrogant SOB about JTs rule of a check out dive before doing anything too deep (like the Clark).
Now I know of this diver & he has done some very challenging dives (like the Monitor)& does some very deep stuff in San Diego, but JTs rules are JTs rules & if you know JT they don't change for anybody.
He also only has 3 weekends open for the Hatteras season.
If you could do the weekdays it would probably be wide open.

Hey there Will, when are we going to go check out those new #s Joe told me about?
My drysuit don't mind cold water & 47 is about balmy compared to the 38 I had in Jersey 2 weeks ago.

Bobby,
I hope to get out this weekend, weather cooperating. Sunday's looking good. If you're available, let me know. I'll give Joe a call in the morning.
There are three sites, two with promise. The third may be just a pile of junk. The other two; one looks to be a wooden vessel (deteriorated hull) with boilers and an engine, the other looks to be steel hulled. Joe's liking the wooden hull vessel for lobsters. It's far enough away from other known wreck sites to not be confused with them. Besides, I have scans of the other sites, exact numbers and this isn't one of them. Both are in the 65-85fsw range - easy, with lots of time to explore, spear fish, or snatch bugs.

I've located all kinds of crazy stuff out there. Shipping containers, concrete blocks, culvert pipes, and rock piles, etc. I need to get Wendy back on the boat. that way when I find something, I can make a dive, while she stays with the boat. Really, she doesn't mind... Also need to get practicing with the Video Camera. Haven't yet gotten it wet.

Before I forget, check the post from your Kurn trip report. I took some photos of you guys on Pelican II and posted one of them for you.
