Diving in Austria??

Hi there i just wanted to find out if there was any places in Austria we one can do some divin ? Im goin to be there either in may or october. what are the recomendation there on wetsuits , i know its cold there in winter so will a 5 mil suit be good enough

There are some lakes....I recently saw a book about diving in Germany, Austria and Switzerland...so there must be some diving.

There is quite a bit of diving in the lakes. You have two factors to consider, though: most of them are at elevation and they are filled with glacial run-off. So, get trained in altitude diving, and, depending on your tolerance for cold water, you may want to look at more than a 5mm, especially in May.

I didn't dive while in Europe, but let me check with some friends in Germany and Austria to see if they can recommend some specific dive sites and/or shops.

well not 100% sure but it will proberly be near worgel or innsbruk and my time plan has changed from may to june next yr so it gives me time to plan my research on what to do in that area . Yeah im busy doin my advance course tho so they will ask my instructer if i can do the altitude speicality course and be fully qualified for that. As for the extra warmth will see about that seein that im such warm water lover

Hi chrisgp007,

as a native Austrian I dive a lot in the lakes. Diving is very popular in Austria. You should use a drysuit, especially in Tirol (5Ž°C to 8Ž°C). If you don't dive dry a 7mm plus vest and hood is a minimum.
If plan to stay in Tirol I can recommend: Fernsteinsee/Samarangersee. The Samarangersee is known for its excellent visibilty: 40m to 60m Another beautiful place close to is the Blindsee (Mohr-Life Resort)

Of course you should visit the Salzkammergut, one of Europes top lake diving destinations.

In May/June it is possible to visit the shallow "Gruener See" in Styria (Tragoess). When the snow is melting in spring time the lake is rising up to 10m, cristal clear (50m to 60m) and very cold.

In the south of Austria are the beautiful Carinthian lakes like Weissensee.

i will consider that on checkin those places out there, only issue is im not qualified to use a dry suit and my instructers arent able to do the course for me , will proberly have to look at rentin a 7 mm wetsuit and all there if possible as i will take all the other gears of mine there.

Hi Chrisgp007,

I am Austrian and usually dive in our lakes with wet suits or dry suit. If you are not accustomed to dry suit diving, this would be an excellent opportunity to learn it here. And if you want to dive in a wet suit, as I did many times, I recommend to get a 7 mm plus a 3 mm shortie to wear under the full suit, as well as a hood and thick gloves and neoprene socks. This way, you should be able to stand the cold water quite well. I do not recommend the use of "ice vests", which are normally worn on top of the wetsuit, as they give very little extra thermal protection.

will look into that as my budget on spendin is on ice right now so will save up abit more and proberly take that option and do a dry suite course there if that doesnt work out will just rent the gear there at the dive shops at the lakes

I will be in Austria next week, hiking in Zillertal. After that I might find one free day for scuba diving, 1-2 dives in some lake/river. River would be more interesting in some way. Question - as I am alone, then could you suggest some dive places/clubs, where it is possible to find with short notice (I can say maybe 2-3 days before, when exactly is that free day) diving group? Place should be easily reachable by train/bus.
