Different divers have different diving styles....it's important to find someone who dives in the style you enjoy, or find a way to make them do it
For example, my hubby is one of those people who wants to go somewhere to look at something and then come back....whereas, I'm one of those people who likes to go slowly and look at everything along the way. He used to take off and leave me trying to catch up, out of breath, and not enjoying myself. At some point, he decided he wanted to start trying to catch lobsters, so we started diving with that in mind....it forced him to slow down, peer into every crack or hole, devise a plan to grab one, grab it, measure it, toss it in the bag....now me, I'm afraid of lobsters....I have no desire to touch one! I humor him cause he enjoys it, I like to eat lobster, and I get to look around and take my time.
We also got him a camera....and you can't speed away and try to take pictures at the same time
Unfortunately for the OP, when it's a DM that's speeding through a dive and expecting you to stay with the group, there's not a whole lot that can be done other than maybe bringing it to their attention during a surface interval and asking them what the deal is.
