[If you don't care to use a snorkel, or think it's useless, please skip this post now.]

I always have a snorkel with me for surface swims, hanging out in possibly choppy conditions. I don't want to worry about attaching/detatching it, so it's clipped onto my mask, reasonably close to the frame. Underwater, it sometimes feels in the way though.

I just saw a picture where it looked like the snorkel keeper was way around toward the *back* of the mask strap -- that never occurred to me though, got me thinking, hence this post.

So where do people attach their snorkels to their masks that makes them most happy? Also, let me know if this is with or without a hood (in Monterey, I have a hood obviously; in Hawaii, I don't). I'm not giving up my snorkel, but would love if it i didn't notice it quite so much.

Thanks!

I put mine on the left with a snorkel keeper next to where the strap goes into the Mask.
I do this here in Alaska and I do it the same when I dive warm water as well.

My snorkel has a built in keeper so I ran the mask strap through it.

Mine is firmly attached to the inside of my bag.

(Had to say it)

David,

Good for you! I wear one all the time for the reasons you mention including taking my fins off when reaching the boat. I experience choppy conditions frequently and find it particularly useful.

You may find the need to just simply move the snorkel around a bit while at depth and readjust while on the surface. I wear a lightweight hood more for the sun in Thailand than the temp, but don't feel it interferes at all with the snorkel. On my picture you can see how the snorkel is turned. Keeping it attached is best IMO, because if you find you need it at the surface attaching it adds an extra unnecessary step especially in choppy water or if you need to look after a buddy.

Safe diving,

Purchase one that folds in half & keep it in your BC pocket, so when you need it you can deploy it and all other times it is not in your way while diving.

I attach mine to the left side of my mask strap by a small clip that allows me to slide the snorkel closer or farther away from my face. I always dive with a snorkel in cold water and warm water. It sounds like you need to find a different method of attaching your snorkel to your mask so you can slide it back away from your face when diving underwater. Snorkels RULE!!!!!!!

Not to be a wisenheimer, but the vast majority of modern snorkels all attach to the mask strap with a clip that allows you to slide the snorkel along the strap (if your's didn't come with that type of clip, you can probably get one cheap). The snorkel doesn't have to stay in the same spot on the strap all of the time. Why not just reach up and slide it to the most comfortable spot for what you're doing?

EDIT: (I see Blair Mott beat me to it)

I use the included clip to attach my snorkel to the left side of my mask strap.

I had a US PADI Divemaster sarcastically ask me if I was going snorkeling or diving. I reminded him that snorkels are required for PADI cert dives. He replied that he never wore one.

In Israel, land of many dive regulations, snorkels are not required - and are actually discouraged in the Red Sea. So I put mine in my BCD pocket.

I will have the last laugh if we ever have a long swim back to shore :) .

And he's quite entitled to do that - nowhere do padi standards say you have to wear a snorkel.
