Some of you may already be aware of this, but I wasn't, so I figured I'd post it for everyone's benefit...

I was talking to a buddy of mine this weekend who works over at Reef Photo (Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros), and he mentioned that Patima recently came out with a housing for the G-10.

I shoot a G-9 in a Patima Housing and am very happy with it, so I'm not in the market for a new setup at the moment, but I know many of you out there are looking for options for the G-10. So today, I went to the Patima website and found that they do indeed have it on their website.

The housing looks pretty much identical to their G-9 housing, which is a very solid and well made, except it appears to be anodized in black. The housing also appears to come equiped with two ports, which allow for the addition of 67mm threaded lenses, just like their G-9 housing.

If you want a quality housing for your Canon Powershot G-10, I would give the new Patima Housing a serious look. You can check out the housing at their site at:

http://www.patimahousing.com/eng/products/sub2_1.html

Also, I would imagine that Reef Photo (Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros) will probably carry it, as they sold me my G-9 Patima Housing, plus all the strobes, arms & bases, lenses, and optical cables I needed to set up my entire rig.

It does look like a awesome peice of hardware but i have read prices of about $999 US thats a bit outlay for me....i do like the look if it compared to ikelite houseing and would prefer this over the Fix 10 housing

but i could get the ikelite and a good stobe for same cost

ill look into the priceing a bit more

The Patima G9 Housing cost me about $1000 US, so I suspect the G10 will be similar, or a bit more. However, keep in mind that the Patima Housings are solid aluminum and have a depth rating in the 100 meter range, and they come standard with an slot to connect your strobe optically and two seperate ports for close-up and wide angle.

There's no question that the Ikelite is a nice housing and it is cheaper, but since their G10 housing does not currently allow for the addition of different ports and wet lenses, I don't even consider it an option. The G10 is a nice camera, but for underwater use, the ability to use close-up & wide angle lenses is near mandatory, otherwise, you're just too limited in the type of shots you can take. From my perspective, it doesn't do me any good to save a few hundred dollars, if it doesn't give me the ability to increase the range of my photography through the use of external lenses.

With the G9, I always suggested to folks that already had Ikelite strobe(s), to seriously consider the Ikelite housing first, because it offered them sync connected ttl and the ability to use external lenses, but that's changed with the G10, unless Ikelite reconsiders their approach to the addition of ports and lenses to the G10 housing.

Just my $0.02.

Adrian

This is very true you make some excellent points.....

i think im gonna wait for a month or so stick with my current setup wait till things are sorted with patima houseing go from there

Many thanks for the announcement Adrian, but just a quick clarification.

Patima is currently producing this housing, as well as a Nikon D90 housing. I don't expect either one by the end of Jan, though, and I don't have a clear date on when they'll land yet.

We were able to twist their arm into the Tech Black color just for you :)

Hi Ryan,

Ok, so perhaps my announcement was a bit premature. However, after speaking to Tony this weekend, then seeing it on the Patima website today, I apparently incorrectly assumed it would be out sooner, rather than later, and thought I'd let the folks know, because I know lots of folks are looking for a quality G10 housing.

Thanks for coming online and clarifiying the status of the housing.

BTW, the Tech Black color would look good as the centerpiece to my setup!:D

Hey,
I have a few Ikelite strobes but i'm considering the Patima housing for the G10.Will i be able to use them at least on manual mode?
I think there is an ikelite bulkhead on the Patima housing for the G9 but have no idea about this new one.

Adrian-

I noticed the details of your G9 setup. I currently have only the short port and Ike WA lens for the Ike housing.

I've taken some decent close up shots in macro, but do not have a macro lens.

Can you provide some insight on both the the Semi-Fisheye Dome and Inon Close-Up Lenses? And would these even be compatible with the Ike housing?

Thanks in advance,
Maria

Hi Maria,

I have not had any first hand experience with the Ikelite Housing, but it is my understanding that 67mm lenses, such as the Inon lenses you are inquiring about, are compatible with the Ikelite Housing, but I think you may get some slight vignetting with some of the lenses, which would require you to zoom in a bit to remedy that. I would check with Ikelite or an underwater photo shop, such as Reef Photo, to be absolutely sure.

I've used Inon's close-up lenses, both single and dual stacked, for a while now, both on my current system and on my previous Sony setup. The lens on the G9 itself is pretty powerful, but will not allow you to get very close to your subject, which is where the close-up lenses come in handy. Inon's close-up lenses are fairly reasonbly priced, and when combined with the long port, will allow you to get much closer to your subject and really improve the quality of your shots. You can also stack two Inon lenses, and really really zoom in on tiny subjects. Just one footnote, with each addiditonal close-up lens, you reduce the depth of field, so the more you magnify, the tougher it will be to get your subject in focus. This is particularly evident when stacking both lenses together - So as Ryan from Reef Photo told me once, when using both lenses stacked, snap lots of pictures slightly moving the camera a bit closer and further away, and you will eventually find a perfectly focussed shot somewhere within the group, and he was right, because that approach has worked for me.

With regard to the dome unit on the Inon UWL-100 - Wow! I added it on last year, and I love it. The lens, with the dome unit, allows me focus right up to the lens, yet still covers a broad area of approximately 131 Degrees. All I can say is that, for me, that lens is like my American Express Card...I don't leave home without it!

Hi Adrian-

Great info- thank you so much. I worked with Ryan when purchasing my setup for the G9, so I will give him a call to discuss the lenses in more detail. I'm headed to Thailand in February, and would be great to have greater capability/flexibility. By the way, can I borrow that AMEX card?

Thanks again,
Maria
