Unwanted Teeth?

One of our own often goes to school and shares her knowledge of shark's teeth with children. Additionally she teaches the children to make necklaces using the teeth that she has found. I can just imagine what a thrill that is for the kids. Recently though she had to purchase $700 in materials (including teeth).:shocked2:

This got me thinking, many of us love to go look for the teeth and of course, we love all the special ones, like the megs, but there are a great amount of teeth we just toss off to the side to collect dust. Personally I give mine to kids I know.

So I was wondering, if there are teeth you don't particularly care much for and would like to help assist in this project and make a kid smile, you might like to donate your teeth to this super cool cause

Sure thing Babe. All of us here like to help out when we can - more so when it comes to kids. I think it is super cool you take time out from your schedule, and your own goings on, to give back. It means a lot and thanks for taking the time.

I am the coach at a local elementary school & everyone there knows I'm a diver. I am often asked by the classroom teachers to bring in my dive gear during their science classes & explain how it works. I take in my old stuff so that they can actually touch it & I talk alot about Venice & shark toothin'. My school is almost 80% free & reduced lunch & it always amazes me how these kids live in this wonderfully rich ecosystem & yet have no real experience with it. At the end I give each student a shark's tooth & then they have to research what kind of shark it came from & write a story about it. Those kids just love those teeth! I'll talk to them weeks later & they'll still be carrying their tooth around in their pocket! I'm a big believer in making education real for kids & showing them all the neat stuff they can do with the knowledge they gain. I'd be more than happy to shoot ya some teeth!

This is some great stuff here! Wish I was in your area. I'd set up training dives and require students to collect em and send to teachers for this kind of use. Just be careful some nutjob in the administration or one school board dirtbag doesn't see them as some kind of weapon! But as long as it's not a 5-7 inch meg tooth it should not be an issue.

It's encouraging to hear there are so many people that also share their teeth with kids!

Does anyone know where to get those little ziplocks that are about 1" X 2"? One of the things I've found (and get feedback on) is that after I leave, invariably there are a couple of kids who lose theirs and are upset. I started giving two each and then three each away, and then just leaving a handful with the teacher or scout leader of the group I visit. I thought about those little baggies like you see on "Cops" type shows when they do a drug bust, but I can't find them available anywhere retail. To be honest I hate to ask as I don't want someone to get the wrong idea (this is a really small town). I haven't tried ebay I guess.

I started just bringing in a shoebox and letting the kids pick some out, but I found my supplies quickly dwindled when there wasn't a throttle in place. Invariably there are a few kids that grab as many as they can. It would be nice to be able to put a couple or three each in a bag before arrival. I tried old film containers, but they're too big and too useful (and I don't have that many).

Not related, but airplanes are a great place to have a bag of teeth. I do the Orlando inbound flights a lot and when the weather gets rough and kids start getting scared, its nice for them to get a distraction, particularly when they're coming in for a vacation. It's amazing how quickly the tears dry up when you hand the parents a couple of teeth to give their children. I usually pick out the imperfect ones for this as they get beat up in my carry on anyway, but the kids don't seem to mind. Also, it forces me to cull out all those cups full of fossils my wife complains are 'cluttering up the darn china cabinet'.
