So here is my question for all you folks with more experience than myself. When flying, do you carry on your video equipment or do you check it as luggage? I've only had one trip with my stuff and I checked it going but thought about it during the week and took it is a carry on during the return trip.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

These days I have to check everything except the camera, as my housing takes up two Pelican cases (Gates for Sony Z1U). If I only had a smaller size housing, I used to put the camera in the housing - minus the O ring - and carry it on that way. Lots of strange looks in the airport for sure.

I've only travelled twice with my setup. Both times carried on my housing in one carry-on. My camera(s)(video and still) and computer carried-on in a small backpack. Lights were carried-on with regs in one of my wife's carry-on! Everything else was checked.

Congratulations on going to video. I think you will really enjoy the process, just remember shooting and editing go together!

I really had no intention of going video but we had a used equipment sale at our LDS earlier this year and a lady had a TopDawg housing, HID lights, extra batteries, monitor back, sony DCR HC42 camera, extra o-rings, Pelican case, etc. and she was asking just $1000. All in excellent condition. So I thought "What the heck". I'll give it a shot. If I don't like it no big amount of money lost and I can sell the set-up. Well I got hooked big time.

I'm already wanting to upgrade to something like a L&M Bluefin housing with the LED lights and a Sony HD camera. But I'm gonna slow down and dive with my set-up for another year or so and then maybe take the next step. I'm seeing some great deals on used systems like I have mentioned. I really want to be able to do WB and I like the flip filter instead of putting it on the camera before you go in.

I think part of the answer is how large is your housing and how much does the stuff weigh. That is several things I took into account when I was looking at housings late last year. That's why I ended up with a Seatool HC7 housing. It only weighs about 3.5 pounds and about 5.5 # with the camcorder in it. It's small enough that it fits in a 7x7x9 bag with the tapes, extra batteries and cords all together. So the whole works comes in under 10#. This I place in a carry-on with most of the clothes I'll need for a week, reg and computer. Carry-on normally weighs about 20#. OH,, no underwater lights.

I've been through the misplaced luggage thing several times and they'll never see my video gear. I'd have to be nuts. I know there are other options such as Pelican cases, but weight begins to be an issue when traveling the Pacific islands, and Pelican cases are heavy in their own right.

That's one thing I find with the Pelican case. My set-up is 23 lbs. That includes everything about my video equipment but that's kinda heavy I think. I'll be going on my second trip to Bonaire in February. Not sure yet if I am going to check it or carry it.

I'm not a videographer but I pack my camera and laptop in a backpack and the housing in my carryon. It makes both a litle heavy. I'm going to upgrade the carryon to a dedicated photo type (Lowepro I think) for more protection for my gear. I worked too hard to get the DSLR & Housing I wanted to check it.
