we are considering a dive trip to Roatan and staying at Coconut view resort. Anyone have any reviews to give or recommendations? Worth the money? How is the diving?

I went to Roatan, diving was awesome, some current, but not strong. Lots to see.

we stayed at Anthony's Key Resort, so I don't know about coconut.

I think you are talking about CoCoView Resort. If so, I can give it a thumbs-up. They have a well run dive operation and the resort is well maintained. They have a tremendous repeat business so that should tell you something.

I have also stayed at Bay Island Beach Resort and I liked that a lot as well. It is a little smaller operation but very well run. I prefer this place because I think the diving on the side of the island that BIBR is on is better diving. But that's just my opinion.

If you choose to go to CoCoView you won't be disappointed.

I was just there last month and found this rating on another thread before I went. I wanted to wait and judge for myself but, for the most part, have to agree with this rating:

Dive Op - 10
Diving compared to a rock quarry - 7
Diving compared to anywhere else in the Caribbean - 3
Lodging compared to camping in a tent - 7
Lodging compared to Motel 6 – 3
Food compared to MREs – 7
Food compared to most all-inclusive Caribbean resorts – 2
Beach – 0
Things to do when not diving if you’re 80 – 9
Things to do when not diving if you’re under 80 – 2
Nearby activities/amenities for Third World Country – 5
Closest activities/amenities for non- Third World Country – 0

I....have to agree with this rating:

1 out of 1576 people that go hate the place. :doctor: Of that group of 1/1576, 85% of that group is one same person who keeps getting new user id's at SCUBA Board so he can keep posting the same stuff over and over. The other 15% of that 1/1576 of visitors thought it was going to be something other than a dive resort. 1516.2/1576 come back for a second trip, many come back 10+ times.

The original poster previously admitted that he was looking for a Club Med/Sandals experience. That- it aint.

CoCoView harks back to the day that we traveling divers went in search of diving at real dive resorts. CCV has always made every decision in favor of the diver. You will likely find no better dive infrastructure anywhere- that refers to the boats, the gear room, the process.

It is arguably the best resort shore dive in the Caribbean, certainly the best on Roatan. It is a night divers paradise. The South side of Roatan is known for its micro and macro critters.

1575 out of 1576 divers agree.

You know RoatanMan, I do find it a little odd that the very first post someone would ever make on ScubaBoard would be like the one from ItsAllGood60. But I guess you gotta start with something.

CCV is a fine place but it's not the only place. There are many good dive resorts on Roatan and other some have terrific house reefs. Some divers like Bay Island Beach Resort and some divers like Reef House. Some like others. I'm not sure where some people get there facts. Where did the 1575 out of 1576 diver thing come from? I guess I wasn't included in that survey along with the hundreds of divers I met on Roatan when I lived there. Hmmmm?

Quite true, but CoCoView... that's what the OP asked about.

Yes, some divers do like that dive, Spooky Channel. I don't and from what you said earlier, you don't. For me it's just too far a swim out from the entry point. CCV, you step out the door and fall in the water- it's right there, the wreck, the DC3 the walls.

I guess the absurdity of that number and the precise 1516.2 escaped you. It was intended as a joke. Remember, I was responding to a known troll, you'll get to recognize him the more time you spend here on ScubaBoard.

Chuck, I read this and other of your posts, No, Roatan is not the only place I have ever dived. No, I have not "lived" on Roatan, but in the 52+ weeks I have spent there, I have also worked directly for the Island government (that's where the + comes in on my number of weeks). I have gotten off CCV's private island quite a bit, done a lot of driving, piloted any number of boats, unloaded a lot of cargo. I know the guts of the place pretty well.

I have dived all over the world, from the Indian Ocean, Africa, the Red Sea, Europe, the Med, all over the South Pacific and been off of just about every rock in the Caribbean. Most every Caribbean Liveaboard. Truk in the 70's and in Mexican overheads a month later. My unfortunate choice of the name Roatan Man is rather limiting when some don't read my profile or scan through my previous posts.

I have seen a lot of dive resorts and diving, and although Roatan doesn't offer "the best" diving in the world, for me, it is certainly in the Caribbean's top 3.

I measure all other dive operations, resort based shore dives, boats and resort infrastructure by what I have seen at CoCoView. For the serious diver who really wants that 4+1 each day (the +1 is a night dive), there is no better place at such a bargain.

If you are looking for something else other than for maximum nitrogen loading, I am no authority on where to go. Lots of people want all sorts of different things when they spend a week in paradise. That's why there are different options. Non-dive junkies should not go to CCV.
