Dive sites near Atlanta, GA?

Due to the pleasures of work, I am moving to the Atlanta area from December - February and I am hoping that you'll will extend your Southern hospitality to Massachusetts native Yankee.

Can anyone recommend sites perhaps close to the Atlanta area? I know that Ginnie Springs is about 4 hours away.

Fresh water, dark quarries are fine too. I am simply trying to learn of the areas that I can dive. Work will be a steady M-F, 7a-4p. So nights and weekends are mine to do nothing but dive.

So will you help a dive addict fined were to score his diving fix while away from home?

I did a google search and Atlanta is about 5 hours from Panama City Beach, FL. We have a very active artificial reef program here and there are wrecks abound. Here is a link with some of the popular dive sites in the area: Popular dive sites

I think most of the better wrecks are what most of the local dive shops call 6-hour trips. When you get out just a few miles further many of the wrecks are far larger.

Alabama Blue Water 3-4 hours to the west. Good cold dive. But then again you're from Massachusetts so it may be tropical to ya.

Several folks from Ga. frequently hit up Blue water each weekend. So you should be able to hook up and find some car poolers.

There are a bunch of springs in the Florida panhandle. Granted, you're looking at a 4 hour drive, but if you leave right after work on Fridays, you'll get to the panhandle by 7pm (you gain an hour coming to us ) and have 2 days of nonstop diving. Get cavern certified and your options open up quite a bit. You can always camp at Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna or stay at one of the local hotels (I can get you a great rate at a decent one). Let me know when you're in Atlanta and ready to come down. I'll show you some of the local sites.

That is almost my exact intention. I am wanting to get tech 1 / cave 1 certified. And while it is a bit of a drive, I plan on driving down Friday nights, and camping out over the weekend.

Don't know what part of Atlanta your going to be in, but Lake Lainer is very close to Atlanta (on northside). This time of the year its dry suit diving. Lot of Florida locations are 4 to 5.5 hours away. I make several week end dive trips to Florida, always room for another diver.
