Irresponsible diving?

As long as the divers are certified and have buddies, I don't see how the the DM was technically obligated to do anything. He wasn't going to be much help to anyone underwater anyway, waiting on the shore...

Last weekend I went on a shore side organized by a LDS. They had one of their DMs there to collect our ten bucks, make sure we had a buddy, and generally look after people.

The above portion from the OP gave me the impression that the DM was doing duties in a professional capacity. It clearly states that the LDS had one of their DMs there to collect the money, buddy people up and generally look after people. Making a personal dive before the air runs out is not part of these duties and actually interferes with them. Hence my conclusion. Did I read it wrong?

D/Ms know what they are getting themselves into. They are accomplished divers. If I were you, I would not imitate him, however, until you also have become a D/M.

It was really nice of him to loan out his own gear.

I am not saying this to offend anyone (especially DMs) out there but this is kind of a naive statement. To say that you can only be an accomplished diver if you carry the DM certification is just wrong. This would imply that one of the many divers out there who have logged thousands of dives are not accomplished? And that they would not know what they are getting themselves into?? Come on. I am all for certifications and having them but I also know that there are "accomplished" divers out there that DO NOT carry the DM certification. There are bad seeds everywhere just as there are good seeds everywhere. Some non-DM divers are just as accomplished (if not more) than some of the DM's out there.


But I definitely do agree that it was nice of him to loan out his gear to an apparent newbie.
