For those of you thinking about going high definition, you may find this post useful. This is the first Hi Def dive report that I posted. As some of you may know, I got a Sony HDR-HC7 for a real nice Christmas present from my wife. I have been just waiting to use it to make underwater video and my trip last week to Grand Cayman gave me the perfect opportunity. It is at:

Grand Cayman East End Dive Report on Vimeo

I can see that the PQ is much superior to my formerly SD dive videos. There are several clips that I think are close to stunning. Which brings up a point that even though the PQ is better, there is still a HD learning curve going on. In looking at the raw video and editing it, I see where I could have done some things better to maximize the high resolution. Anyway, the video is what it is.

I think it looks pretty good in Vimeo HD, though there is some amount of compression. I plan on getting a blu-ray player for this Christmas and believe the true HD quality will come through when I am burning blu-ray discs and watching them on my big screen HD TV.

Now If Mac would get on board with Blu/Ray and start bring the price down then Im in.....Nice shots..........Mark

Play your camera on your HDTV through the HDMI port if you want to see all it can do...

Steve beat me to it, Marshall. I check the quality of my HC-7 footage by playing the tape from the camcorder to my HD TV via an HDMI cable. Will look at your footage to see if you are getting any of the nasty green shadows that I get with my HC-7 here in the more turbid SoCal waters.

Steve know where I can get a adaptor for the a1u to hdmi? Mark

Your right! boy hit someone when there down........ Do you have one of these?

What type of housing are you using? I'm looking at the HC-9 with is the same form factor as the HC-7...I'm looking for inputs on housings. What folks like, dislike ect

I have the Equinox ProPak 6 housing. No disrespect intended to the gentleman last week that had a terrible problem with his (by the way, I do feel for you and I do hope that gets resolved), but I have about 30 dives on my housing, both SD and HD now, and I have had not trouble. Probably jinxed myself.

By the way, the first thing that I did when I got home was hook the camera via HDMI to my HD LCD TV and watch the video on big screen. I think there is one shot, the last shot after the shark with the tarpon, where the light is right, I am at the right distance, and the shot approaches stunning. I think with more shooting practice, more of the video can be stunning HD.

The other thing I noticed is that parts of the video almost approached 3D. I guess what I am saying is that I am excited about the potential of my new camera.
