What laws discriminate against "gay" people?

David, in the spirit of knowledge

Homosexuality laws of the world - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'll summarize this for you, it says that worldwide:

35 African countries have laws that discriminate against homosexuals; these laws range from fines to imprisonment and death. Sudan, Somalia Mauritania, and Nigeria have death penalites, Sao Tome, Mozambique and Guinea Bissau have labour camps, for example.

21 Asian countries have discriminatory laws (fines, life in prison, death penalty in Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, and UAE, while Yemen has flogging and the death penalty) as do 8 North American countries (fines, imprisonment, life in prison, hard labour), 11 Oceanic countries (fines, imprisonment, hard labour) and 1 South American country (life in prison). Europe has no discriminatory laws.

In the States:

I count 18 states with no workplace anti-discrimination laws in this map dated Nov 2007. Although this article Crooks and Liars » The House Passes The Employment Non-Discrimination Act I referenced in an earlier post says this has changed, November 2007 is not so long ago, eh?

LGBT rights in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Housing discrimination refers to discrimination against potential or current tenants by landlords. In the United States, there is no federal law against such discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, but at least thirteen states and many major cities have enacted laws prohibiting it.[11]"

From what I read, I think the 10% is an overstatement...I think it's more like 2% or 3%.

From what I understand, the 10% is people who've reported being sexually attracted (even just once) to a member of the opposite sex. Meaning that covers homosexuals, bisexuals, and straight men who mistook a particularly feminine man as a homely (but "do-able") woman :D

From what we know of the genetics of homosexuality, the above isn't surprising. Multigenic traits tend to produce a range of phenotypes, rather than two extremes, and that is exactly what we see - a "rainbow" of sexualities :shakehead:

Realistically speaking, it'll probably be quite a long time until we have an accurate account for the % of people who are truly homosexual. Even in permissive countries, homosexuality still has a stigma attached to it. Meaning there are many who are in denial, or hiding their sexual orientation. Until that stigma is gone its doubtful that we'll have any accurate count as to how many people are gay.

What are you protecting them from? Love between two people? My gosh, that's horrible!

Indeed.

Talk about homophobic
Lesbian kisses at game ignite Seattle debate - CNN.com

Heaven forbid parents have to 'explain' that two people love each other! The kids will be
eternally traumatized by seeing to women kiss! LOL, that is so beyond ridiculous.

Except in the case of one man and one woman, I believe it's wrong so I don't want it told to my children.

Because not only is homosexuality a sin but to place a stumbling block in front of another (especially a child) is also a sin...in my view, of course.

So since homosexuality is a 'sin', whatever that is, how is banning gay marriage not totally contrived religion based discrimination. It is just another form of religion based desire to control other people. Some homosexual couples are better parents than some heterosexual couples.

<snip> Some homosexual couples are better parents than some heterosexual couples.

This could be very true, and if reversed also very true, your point?

That's a great reason but it was a close vote and I don't think it will stand.

Latest polls show California voters won't overturn, but things can still change.

It looks like it will be a long up hill battle for a small number of people and a handfull of activist judges.
Please define activist judge.

That's why, their only real hope is to work on the kids. If enough people grow up seeing same sex marriage as just everyday stuff, some future generation of voters will let it all happen. This campaign is taking place in our schools and involves a whole different set of proposed legislation, activist teachers/administrators and moves like the recent "gay rights day of silence" that was supported by some schools. Peer pressure works on kids.

It's actually called Day of Silence/Night of Noise. There are teachers who participate in it too, at least at the high school my kids went/go to.

I hope I was clear enough and I hope you really understand the significance of your statement.

If nothing else has convinced you that what you want effects other people, your own statement here should. To actively interfere with a parents wishes in the raising of their children (that's what we're talking about here) is a violation of such magnitude that it's completely off the scale.

Society may be worse off than I think but I don't think people will stand for that. Raise your own children in any way you see fit but you should leave other peoples children alone.

Mike, you have repeatedly complained about parents not raising their kids and leaving it to TV and various institutions. I agree with you that too many parents have abdicated their parental duties. I'm raising my kids. Public schools by their very nature always interfere with some parents' wishes. That's why some people send their children to private school or home school them.

People discriminate, yes. But where are the laws that say "if you are homosexual you can't..." ?

Let's start with Don't Ask/Don't Tell, if your a homosexual you can't serve openly in the armed forces.

Some states have laws, like Florida, that don't allow homosexuals to adopt.

There are laws that discriminate against homosexuals in the U.S.

I guess I should have been more specific, I was talking about U.S. laws. We are far less discriminatory than most countries IMO. ( I could research and post examples, but you probably agree)

From your link on [11];
If you encounter discrimination after your tenancy has begun, the picture may improve dramatically.

If you have a lease, your rental cannot be terminated until the lease term is over, unless you have broken an important lease clause (such as failing to pay rent or keeping a pet in violation of a no-pets rule) or you have committed an illegal act. Most lease clauses do not expressly address whom you share your bed with; and most states have tossed out their anti-sodomy and fornication laws. So, as long as your lease has no clause prohibiting certain types of sexual behavior and you don't live in a state that makes sodomy or unmarried sex illegal, a landlord who attempts to evict you solely on the grounds of your sexual orientation would have a hard time succeeding. This result would be true even for renters who live in cities or states that don't prohibit sexual orientation discrimination. Those that live in states that do would have an even stronger case.

The U.S. Constitution does not cover all U.S. laws, nor should it. This is set up in Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

I thought I explained that. Parents would naturally want to protect their children from those attempting to use the schools to undermine their wishes regarding the raising of their children. When people aren't permitted to make the decisions in the raising of their own children, it is indeed horrible and has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of love. It's a vile act of open hostility and it's unreasonable to expect such an act to be received with understanding or kindness.
