Living will Kill you! Smoking will just help it come sooner.

It won't be long before there it is outlawed in the US anyway (On June 1st the place I work the most is going to ban smoking on company property). Then they will come after us that need to lose 10 or 50 lbs.

From the counrties that I have been to the US is ahead of most places for banning smoking. In China it seems like everyone smokes.

Edit:
Just some ramblings from a non smoker but an advocate of personal responsibility and choice.
Smoking inside public buildings (yes, that includes workplace and bars) has been banned here for many years now and I actually get lots of tourist who smoke themselves saying they wish it where the same where they live..
Outdoors and in private homes/buildings smoking is still allowed tho, so its fully possible to let people choose themselves wether or not they want to smoke or not, while keeping it away from the ones who DONT want to be exposed to it.

If the chinese want to smoke themselves to death, I wont tell them otherwise, it need to be their own choice..

Yes, Life is hard & you will die anyhow. Smoking just makes dieing more expensive and painful.
Divers who smoke should not do it under water, it's bad for the fish and I don't want to swim in an ashtray.

Ex smoker but quit several years before even contemplated diving. Got tired of the coughing, stench, and shortness of breath. I am hyper sensitive to it now. I can smell the person smoking in the car in front of me. I will not patronize establishments that allow it if I can avoid it. My wife likes to go to the casino. The new one does not have a nonsmoking section. About an hour is all I can take before my throat starts to hurt and close up. I know a couple divers who still smoke. I will not be around them and prefer not to dive with them. I also support a total ban on smoking in the workplace.

Yes I too am an ex and hyper sensitive. Over 10 years quit and still wretch when I smell it. And to think "I used to smell like that" (gag)

I'm a non-smoker and an anti-smoker but, to be honest ...

smoking doesn't seem to have any real effect on plain-vanilla recreational diving in the tropics (aka "easy diving"). For some reason, many DMs and Instructors smoke, more than the general population I would say. We won't let you smoke on dive boats, though.

I know very active divers who smoke with no complications.I never have so dont know from experience. If it wasent for all the revenue the government gets from cigarette sales they would be outlawed,They are just too addictive.I say outlaw pre rolled cigarettes.Leave only tobacco legal. Then if somebody has to they can roll their own or get em a corncob pipe. While they are at it outlaw the penny as well.[off subject]Round everything off to the nearest nickel.

I was a smoker when I started diving, but I quit this February. I enjoy diving more than I did smoking. I'm not sure if there is added danger for smokers that dive, a lot of divers smoke, but I didn't want to risk it. And I figure not being a smoker can only help my SAC (ok, that was the real reason I quit...). :)

If you are looking to quit smoking the best advice I can give you is to ask yourself if you REALLY want to quit. If you have any doubts you will not succeed. It's just that simple really. Once you quit you have to make the decision not to smoke every time you get the urge. Every time it pops up you just have to tell yourself, "ok, well smoking is not an option so what else can I do until the craving passes?" I drank a lot of water, and ate quite a bit of popcorn. Before you know it the cravings get further and further apart, and then...you've quit. And you start having more energy, you're less tired, you can do things that were just not an option as a smoker...your quality of life just goes way up.

but..but; I LIKE smoking :(
have to admit that i consume my air bottle sooner than non-smokers; but that may be a speculation

Just don't light up during a dive.

Obviously, smoking doesn't do you any good, and creates additional incremental risk, but I'm not sure that smoking makes diving more dangerous by an amount greater than the the difference between diving & not diving in the first place.

We all make choices to assume personal risk for personal satisfaction. The same logic that's used to curtail the rights of smokers can just as easily, be used against divers, skiers, cyclists, the overweight, drinkers, cofee drinkers, meat eaters, those who won't eat fiber, etc.

I always hear that there is absolutely no benefit to smoking (from non-smokers who can't understand what other folks might enjoy). Imagine how many people cannot fathom why anyone would want to strap on 50# of crap & jump into cold dark water.

Though I'm not a smoker, I wish to live in a society that accepts that one of the privileges of adulthood is to be out & away from parents and able to make choices, good or bad on ones own.

It's as simple as this---I won't tell you how to live your life, & you'll return the courtesy.
