Quoted from the link you posted:

"Customers who purchase economy-class tickets with certain fare types, and are not Elite members of Continental's OnePass frequent flier program, may check one bag at no charge and a second bag for a $25 service fee."

"Continental's premium travelers in economy class -- Elite OnePass members, SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members, Continental Airlines Presidential Plus credit card holders and non-Elite customers who purchase certain fare types -- may check two bags at no charge."

Emphasis added. I'm not sure exactly what that means.

"The policy will apply immediately for destinations within the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada for travel commencing on or after May 5, 2008."

At least that doesn't cover my upcoming trip to Utila, well not yet anyway!
Looks like it doesn't apply to Cozumel either.

Well this sucks! Guess that means we'll see bigger & bigger carry-on bags trying to be brought on board, so I wonder if they'll finally start getting strict about the carry-on sizes.

It's only for coach class domestic travel... right now at least.

Do you think they realize that this just encourages people to cram as much as possible into carry-on? They allow a 40 lb bag and a "personal item" for carry-on. Hmmm, isn't that 40lb carry-on going to effect the fuel cost just as much as if it was checked as a 2nd bag? As if it's already not a PITA to board with all the stuff being hauled into the cabin, the battle for overhead space, etc.

:shakehead:

I wasn't sure how to understand it.....if they would charge for the first leg like getting fm Austin to Houston and then on to Coz or other international points....some of us cannot get direct nonstop flights to international destinations so I thought that maybe that would be the way they would get their 25.00 bucks.... well this is probably trival useless information ;)

I'm not a travel expert, but I would think it goes by final destination. I lay over in Houston too.

I don't think it'll be long before they are charging all sorts of fees. I just did a quick search for tickets on their site, $800 from Ontario, CA to Coz.:11:

If you book to an "international" destination and their routing involves a connection in the US, you're still considered an international passenger, so no 2nd bag fee.

I thought we were gonna get stuck for the surcharge (or pack real light) for our May 18 trip to Coz. Since we're going to get stuck with the 20kg limit on our Indonesia trip in the fall, we could use this trip for "packing light" practice. Then I remembered that we had booked on Frontier for this Cozumel trip, not Continental. So if you can access the Frontier Airlines system to Cozumel, no $25 charge, at least not yet! And no "pack light" practice either.
