I don't mind configuring my gas supply as though I am diving solo. But I do try to stay away from divers that seem a bit unusual when I can. I can't imagine denying gas to anyone who might need it U/W.

Assuming that gas is the only redundancy you need on a dive, that may be true. I wonder how effective a pony bottle is in helping you getting untangled. Or helping you spot and resolve gear issues.
I've managed, over 40+ years of diving to manage several thousand dives without requiring a buddies assistance.
