Got my C-card in the mail today. Only issue is I used the NAUI books and was told it would be a NAUI card. In the mail was a YSCUBA card.

I paid extra money for it to be NAUI. Could of easily took a cheaper 3 day PADI course(but not learned the skills I did). My instructor taught me alot and cared about my learning and loving scuba. It may be marketing but wondering if anyone else experienced the same?

Have you called your instructor? YMCA and NAUI are definitely separate entities. & you are correct, it doesn't make sense that you received a YMCA certification if you used NAUI books.

What certification you get doesn't make a huge difference as long as you get a good education. The major factor will be what certification will you need for further education. Will the YMCA cert. be accepted as a prerequisite if you want to take advanced NAUI course?

Let us know what your instructor says as this is odd.

Also, know that a YMCA cert. is good. I just wonder if you completed everything necessary to qualify for the YMCA cert as each agency has it's differences. I know that YMCA requires lap swimming and a distance underwater swim on one breath. Did you do something like that?

Six of one half a dozen of another. Ford, Chevy and Dodge......

I took a NAUI course after reading and studying SSI books, took a SSI test, dove pool and OW with a NAUI instructor and got an SSI C-card.

What kind of card it is matters not to me, knowing the skills I need to stay alive is what matters, that and being able to get on dive boats.

YMMV

YMCA card is a good cert, and will be a rare one compared to other's

My original certification was YMCA, it is accepted as a prerequisite for continuing education for PADI classes. I don't doubt the same applies for the other agencies as well.
I wonder if your instructor decided to "upgrade" you to Y since he/she used those standards instead of NAUI standards for the skill evaluation. It would be worth asking.

So what skills did you learn in the Naui course that you wouldn't have learnd with a Padi course? How do you know this? Does your instructor also teach Padi and did he explain the differences? How long is the Naui course? What were the price differences of Naui vs Padi?
Just curious.

Price difference was $100. Not saying PADI would of taught less but 3 day course vs a weekly course that much longer with more pool time.

I just wanted a NAUI card not a ymca card. Especially since I saw a NAUI card when signing up. It's not like they told me this before hand.

Just call your instructor. No need to post till you've talked to him.

You pay for the education, not the card. So don't worry about it.

Just one point to raise here, as it is unclear from your original post...

You do realize that NAUI, PADI, and YMCA are all separate certifying agencies, correct? That PADI and YMCA re not the same thing?

What is important is the training you received and the knowledge you picked up, but FWIW, YMCA does have a reputation as an excellent option in terms of training standards.
