All right, all the conveniences of good ol USA. I like the option of fast food and Starbucks. It's not like Cozumel is some deserted beach paradise. It's set up for tourists and what they like.

I am with Christi on neals post. Although I do agree with some of what he says(not a big fan of starbuck, I can get a lb of ruta maya beans for what it cost for a large starbucks coffee, and is better coffee to boot) I do not care for the 'tone' of the reply. However, a quick addition to my ignore list will keep me from having to read any more of his posts.

Absolutely, different tastes for different people. Some people like Folger's or Maxwell House...I can't stomach them. I love the Verona Blend (as well as a couple of others) that Starbuck's carries. Just like some people love diving with Dive Paradise, others prefer the more personalized shops...no need to be nasty or condescending about it...they've all got strengths and weaknesses.

You don't have to go to Starbuck's, or Dominoes, or Pizza Hut, etc. The locals happen to love these places and are the ones that keep them in business, so I don't understand why visitors to the island get so bent out of shape because the locals are enjoying some American pastimes...that they the people who LIVE FULL TIME on the island welcome! You're here for a week at a time...you certainly have plenty of other options and who are you to say what American (or any other foreign) products they should or shouldn't have access to?

I tried to support Coffee Bean here, but I can't walk in the place without coming out smelling like I've been in a smokey bar...the smoke in there is intolerable to me. Some people love it. Their prices aren't any lower than Starbuck's either.

I love the coffee a friend of mine brings from Vera Cruz when she goes home to visit, but that too is a treat!

Well, let me just say that I feel two diametrically opposed ways about this. On the one hand, like Christi says, I'm there for 2 or three weeks out of the year, so far be it from me to try to dictate what the folks that live there can have access to. OTOH, I somewhat agree with Neal in that businesses like Starbuck's (and Pizza Hut, and McDonald's, and Hard Rock Cafe, and Margaritaville, and Hooters, and Planet Hollywood, and KFC...) are vestiges of Yankee (economic) Imperialism and are a net drain on the local economies which they, um, ... invade. I'll still keep going to Cozumel, but I won't be going to Starbuck's. Puta Langosta is a good place for it, though. ;^)

Well said

As it says at the top of this forum:

Cozumel World Class Marine Park drift diving, renown cuisine and great hospitality. The island with a Mexican heart and a Caribbean soul! You’ve seen the Corona commercials, come experience the reality............................Would you like fries with that?

Having any business thrive will add to the local economy. It will pay employees, managers, delivery people and much more. Sure, US based Starbucks gets a slice but far and away most of the money generated locally, stays locally. I think most of the resentment comes as a result of the fact that as more business establish themselves in Mexico, the costs of vacations there will go up.

I am planning a trip there soon and hope that the Starbucks will have Café de Olla!

As I said, not everyone has to like it...edited by Mania
I'm still not sure how these places can be called a "drain on the economy" though? They employ locals, they welcome locals, and the owners of these "American" establishments are franchisees or licensees...who all happen to be Mexican citizens.

McDonald's is packed with Mexican locals all the time.

Just like in the states, Domino's and Pizza Hut are great take-out options for local families with busy schedules...or who for those who just want something other than Mexican food. You have cuisine from just about every nation in the states...why should those living in a tourist destination be restricted to local food?

I totally agree ... seems like someone has permanently gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.

If the locals like the place, it will stay in business, if they don't - it will be gone. I can't imagine that the tourists will be the ones keeping it in business (but I guess I could be wrong!) I know I don't go to any of these type places on vacation.

I for one, don't frequent these places even in the states, but I'm not going to pitch a hissy and say we should only have barbeque here in Austin. It may be sacrilege, but even barbeque all the time gets boring!! ;) Everyone needs some variety!!
