All right, all the conveniences of good ol USA. I like the option of fast food and Starbucks. It's not like Cozumel is some deserted beach paradise. It's set up for tourists and what they like.

I am with Christi on neals post. Although I do agree with some of what he says(not a big fan of starbuck, I can get a lb of ruta maya beans for what it cost for a large starbucks coffee, and is better coffee to boot) I do not care for the 'tone' of the reply. However, a quick addition to my ignore list will keep me from having to read any more of his posts.
Well, let me just say that I feel two diametrically opposed ways about this. On the one hand, like Christi says, I'm there for 2 or three weeks out of the year, so far be it from me to try to dictate what the folks that live there can have access to. OTOH, I somewhat agree with Neal in that businesses like Starbuck's (and Pizza Hut, and McDonald's, and Hard Rock Cafe, and Margaritaville, and Hooters, and Planet Hollywood, and KFC...) are vestiges of Yankee (economic) Imperialism and are a net drain on the local economies which they, um, ... invade. I'll still keep going to Cozumel, but I won't be going to Starbuck's. Puta Langosta is a good place for it, though. ;^)
I totally agree ... seems like someone has permanently gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.As I said, not everyone has to like it..
If the locals like the place, it will stay in business, if they don't - it will be gone. I can't imagine that the tourists will be the ones keeping it in business (but I guess I could be wrong!) I know I don't go to any of these type places on vacation.I'm still not sure how these places can be called a "drain on the economy" though? They employ locals, they welcome locals, and the owners of these "American" establishments are franchisees or licensees...who all happen to be Mexican citizens.
McDonald's is packed with Mexican locals all the time.
I for one, don't frequent these places even in the states, but I'm not going to pitch a hissy and say we should only have barbeque here in Austin. It may be sacrilege, but even barbeque all the time gets boring!!Just like in the states, Domino's and Pizza Hut are great take-out options for local families with busy schedules...or who for those who just want something other than Mexican food. You have cuisine from just about every nation in the states...why should those living in a tourist destination be restricted to local food?
Actually there is one...none in Bhutan yet.I can't wait to see one at the Great Wall of China, or in Bhutan...yeesh...
