This incident actually happened in Aug 2024 not Aug 2025.
Yeah, the article was published earlier this month and was unclear about covering events of the previous year, like a dozen surgeries.

It amazes me that she spent a month in a Miami hospital, then was transported home before the leg injuries were fully recognized. That infection grew worse.

When I was a kid in the Boy Scouts, during a training exercise on tourniquets, my favorite troop leader, an ex-combat Marine, had three comments about tourniquet use to stop severe bleeding :
1. When the crap hits the fan, first turn off the fan.
2. When bleeding to death, it's not the time to be reading the directions.
3. Losing a limb from leaving a tourniquet on too long, is survivable. Bleeding to death is not.

I carry a C-A-T torniquet. Very small, fits in a pocket.

CATs have a white Velcro strip to write the application time. It’s considered pretty optional in my service, but we only apply a couple year max (quiet small town ). Only get tourniquets from reliable sources since there have been issues with knockoffs on Amazon etc. usually it’s the windlass that breaks and you’re sol. I have a personal preference for the SAM splints, but only carry CAT7s since that’s what’s on the rig. I hasn’t considered bringing one on a dive boat, but any semi serious hike I keep one in my pack. At least they’re small and light.
