so this involves doing an overhaul right? otherwise pushing it back in, it will just blow past back ang close.
Yes, it needs to be torn down completely including removing the HP port plug that doesn't get used and soaked.
Then pick and clean the HP hole (without wallowing it out) clean up the good and put a new kit in it.
Tell your friend that he should start soaking the reg hooked to a tank and pressurized over night and then purge out the ambient chamber with fresh water to move the static salt water out, a spray bottle or hose works well.

The problem is more common than people think.

Mostly the problem comes from dirty tanks, especially aluminum tanks, when humidity has entered the tank and aluminum oxide has developed.

These fine dust/particles can easily clog the tiny channel of the HP ports (check for white/greyish residues on the filter).

Since the channels are not always blocked completely, it can be a bit confusing for divers to see the strange behavior of their SPGs....

Typical Resort Equipment problem in the tropical regions.

Of course there are also other problems that can cause clogging.

I had once a MK 20 where a brass rest of the drilling hole had been bent and pressed into the air channel by the HP Hose.

I had to carefully drill it free.

Soaking in warm soapy water is an option, then with an air gun trying to blow the channel free, but it doesn’t work always.

Same with a small plastic bag with the first and 75% alcohol (or warm soapy water) in a with water filled Ultrasound Machine for while…..

I gave up on very few of these cases, but the matter became simply too time consuming and expensive for my customers…….

That's because you should have gone to phosphoric

Why the hesitancy for the annual service? I know they can be pricey nowadays, but that is really the best path here especially if they don't have the experience/tools to disassemble and do some basic service themselves.

I think they went to biannual?
Regardless, they just need to take care of the stuff better.

What about putting back pressure on the HP port? I've got a Mares MR12 with the same problem. I can't see the blocking from either end, and the opening in the HP chamber is so tiny I'm not sure a wire would be capable of more than minimal force. Seems like blowing it back out the way it came in would be a way to do it. How to plumb either LP or HP to the HP port is what's got me stumped at the moment.
