Hello all

I would love to get certified in full face and purchase one for special dives we have coming up + record some video with me talking. I would love advice on people who have these masks + recorders to know what the best options are and any foibles associated with it.

Any input is greatly appreciated (Yes... I have asked ChatGpt)

Unless you want to synchronize the voice with the video afterwards, you'll need to to put the video mic inside the mask. Most full face masks have an option for installing audio equipment.

Ill sync it after the fact, so was thinking a DJI mic, or something purpose made to record on my body.

I don't think that would work. You'll need a specific in mask audio set up. DJI mic would be both too big to fit in the mask and not at all water proof. Having said that, I am working on basically an underwater shotgun with a Marelux hydrophone, a rode wirelessPro and a waterproof housing from Dryfob. I've done in water tests of the housing after drilling a giant hole in the bottom of it for the hydrophone cable, but haven't dove with the whole set up yet. That is a this week plan. But it would be garbage for open circuit as it would just pick up bubble noises.

Go talk to the dive team people at the nearest aquarium, good chance they have full face coms figured out already and can put you in touch with local techs and suppliers.

What's your budget for something like this? If you're serious about the project, might be worthwhile reaching out to OTS and see what they can offer - they've done a lot of 'media' stuff I know and have probably solved for recording quality audio at some point.

Most video cameras have a tiny mic somewhere on the front. Most of them also have a port to plug in an external mic. Run the cable out of the camera housing and seal it very well. Run the cable into your full face mask the same way. Inside the mask, Mount a button mic on a piece of double sided sticky tape and stick it to the inside of the mask near your mouth. Seal it with epoxy prior to mounting it. use epoxy, not something soft like silicone, etc. to not deaden the audio waves. Epoxy will transfer it to the mic. Voila! There you go. The complete mic in a mask set up. I'll send the consultation and design fee to you care of this board, ok?

I'm familiar with an underwater live show that uses wireless comm full face masks. I don't know all the specific model numbers and details, but I have seen the entire backstage setup. The signal and voice tones, volume, clarity is processed 'live' thru both mixing boards and software programs that eliminate almost all bubble, air inlet, exhale and other "noise" to bring a very clear mid-tone voice quality to the live audience. Underwater equipment alone is a tiny portion and it's software that really produces the clarity. The diver can also hear questions from the 'host' in his ear. The system is well into 6 figures but the voice quality is like he's standing dry infront of you.
