I have been wearing multifocal contacts for diving for about 20 years. I have a different prescription for each eye. The left contact is "geared" more for close vision and the right contact is "geared" towards far vision and this works pretty good.
Yep, that's exactly what I have been doing and it hasn't worked well at all. Today I got a pair of "normal" contacts- not multifocal. That way I can just stick on the reading lenses on the mask and be good to go. If my prescription changes a year or three from now- no worries- just get new contacts.

a first post and i hope I can add value :-)

There are now multifocal, astigmatism correcting contact lenses - they were new last year - I tried them in December in Singapore and found only one issue - they are only available in one base curve also
my prescription was only available in the 2 week version (see image - prices in Singapore$ (SGD))

I tested a couple of sets and my left eye was set to ‘close+inter’ and right for ‘inter+distance’ - the reality is your brain meshes the 2 quite quickly and found better than 20:5 vision was possible. Riding a bike and seeing the bike computer was absolutely fine. (using non prescription sunglasses was also a pleasure!)

Sadly they couldn’t get me a supply the scuba trip the following week to the Maldives - I have a single vision mask and the dive computer is ok with big figures.

I’m hoping the range for my prescription has expanded for my next visit!

Welcome to Scubaboard!! That's exactly what I am working with- astigmatism, and was trying the concentric ring multifocals. They just didn't work well at all for me. Now maybe when I go back this Friday morning, the optometrist will have some new tactic to try and will want me to give them another shot. I'm willing.

thank you! I also can’t use the concentric ring multifocals sadly - did try them a few years ago. Was very surprised to hear ‘oh yes we have contact lenses that will work for you’ :-)

Consider this affordable DIY option using YOUR LENSES;

How is this different from the usual lenses for other divers?
I had the same question!!!

Update to my situation- after several weeks of trying all different kinds of contacts, I am very close to a conclusion. It's monovision (one eye for distance and one for reading/up close). My left eye was easy to figure out- I am left-eye dominant so that is my distance vision. The right eye was a bit tricky and I've tried +0.5 which was too weak, and tried +1.0 which was great. But the stronger you go with the "reading" lens, the worse your distance vision is in that eye so that affects depth perception. You need "stereo" vision for proper depth perception. My optometrist was out of +0.75 "trial" packs of five lenses and that might be the magic bullet, so they ordered some in and I'm just waiting for their arrival to do the final test.

At any rate, I will end up with either +1.0 or +0.75 for my right eye, and no modifications at all needed for my mask. The concentric lens multifocals were a bust for me- just couldn't get it right. I would either have garbage far vision or garbage near vision. I guess for a lot of people monovision is awful but for me somehow my eyes/brain figured it out quickly and it seems much more natural.

I was wrong about this- my astigmatism is not bad enough to require it for contacts, only for glasses.
