You can certainly travel to Egypt. Just don't go on a liveaboard. That's easy. I dove in Dahab and it was awesome. The second best divemaster I've ever had was in Dahab. I had such great dives with her I am going back to Egypt this fall to dive in Dahab with her and trying diving in Sharm (since I am flying in and out of Sharm rather than Cairo as it's much easier.) I never worried about any safety issues in egypt. I was told by my local shop I could dive in the Blue Hole, but they would only take me 50 feet deep (I was only OW certified.) But the shop I dove with insisted I could only dive the Blue Hole if I got AOW certified. In Cozumel, I was diving at 80 feet for extended periods with OW. Once I even went to 100 feet for about a minute. So there is the difference in safety between Dahab and Cozumel.

My reasons have nothing to do with LOBs. I’m not prepared to go anywhere that subjects anyone to that kind of treatment after an accident. Especially with 16 paying customer/friends.

The LOB crisis is bad. Doubling down to try and cover it up by the authorities is insanely stupid. I guess they thought they could ameliorate the issue by having survivors sign documents absolving anyone of blame. Let’s see how that kind of thuggery works out. I’ve dived in Sharm and Dahab before. Not again.

I’ve been to Sharm & Dahab too. They are OK & cheap to dive. If I go that far from US, I’d rather go to Maldives.

As you said, what makes me think twice or 3 times to go back to Red Sea is how they did to the survivors. The judge made things worse on what already a bad situation.

The draw of Egypt is low price, especially for Europeans and it's relatively close compared to other good diving destinations. It's obviously very hot in summer and pleasant enough in winter (drysuit for me, but I'm a wuss). The diving can be very good too. In the good old days, I could book a high end liveaboard with flights and transfers for GBP800-1000. I did a lot of those trips when I lived in the UK. Safety seems to have got worse, but maybe it's always been bad? Having visited the country many times, I'm not surprised by the safety issues or the way the liveaboard survivors were treated. Then there's all the usual ******** related to people trying to get every last cent out of you and hassles with customs. I would go to Egypt again and do a liveaboard if the opportunity arose, but I would be very careful about who I booked with and wouldn't take my son with me.

You folks are getting carried away with your judgments. Don't go on a LA—that's fine—but spreading this decision to land-based diving is just too much.

I can't wait to go back to Egypt and dive there.

Unlike many, you're fluent in English and Arabic, it's cheap and a 3 hour flight from Libya. Your situation is probably better than most on this side of the Atlantic. I don't doubt that you want to go back!

You can come with me, I'll tell them that you are my brother, half brother.
