Time for new computer, displaying compass, depth, and air are important

I thought *most* digital compasses were tilt compensated. Certainly the Shearwater line is.

I may be wrong, but I think I saw SW line compasses being compensated to 45 deg tilt and 8% accuracy, G2 and G2 tek is compensated to 80 deg and 3% accuracy.

I know..... I'm temporarily back to using my Zoop Novo console. It's nice to have air integration though with the computer for SAC history and to track air usage against the dive.

In most circumstances it works better to put the dive computer on your right wrist so that you can still see your depth reading clearly while using your left hand to manipulate your BC inflator and dump valves (plus drysuit inflator and dump valves if you have those). Almost all BCs have those controls on the left side. Whether you're left or right handed makes no difference.

If you also carry a separate dedicated compass then that can go on the left wrist. Divers seldom need to check heading and adjust buoyancy at the same time.

You know, the reality is that I started diving with a console on my left side. I've never considered the computer on the right side but will try it. Even using a camera, when it's held up in front of my face it'd be right there in plain view. Thanks for the input.

Perhaps that's true, but if I'm kicking somewhere, I'm going to be horizontal, and 45 deg is way more compensation than I need.

The geometry and math associated with tilt compensation is surprisingly complicated but once it works, it works. There'd be no reason to limit it to 45 degrees.

Just curious - why do you need to see your tank pressure on the same screen as depth and bearing?

I might check my SPG 2 or 3 times a dive, and only to confirm what my guess is, while I use bearing and depth frequently to navigate in local low vis conditions.

Do you often find a need to navigate to a spot while urgently watching tank pressure?

Removing the need to have tank pressure on the same screen opens up many computers that only need a tap of a button to switch between bearing and pressure.

Not trying to be confrontational - just curious why you need to monitor tank pressure at the same frequency as bearing and depth.

I think such a calculation (mentioned by Rohan) gets really computationally expensive the greater the tilt, my G2 compass goes sluggish on tilt (I have my computer angled on my arm for easy glancing, ~45deg+)

Probably SW said 45 to just cover themselves in a respectful manner — might be able to do it, but it’s not up to (someone’s) performance standard /KPI




Can someone with a SW confirm if the “high refresh rate” applies to >45deg?
