As Boomx5 said, I've been diving this combo for a while. I use an aluminum plate though but I don't think that makes a difference. The 44lb Ranger wing is the perfect size for a small set of doubles. I have a set of doubled up HP 80's which are nice and small and the wing easily has enough lift for these doubles, the BP and 5 lbs of trim weights.
I'll try to take a pic of my setup tonight. Essentially all I did was thread the wing straps through the waist strap slots in the backplate and the singles slot in the plate. You need to make sure you get a plate with cuts for a cam band to dive singles. I got mine from Gary Hoadly who sells his stuff on ebay, for only $40 or so. Its the right price for trying this stuff out.
You'll notice on the sides of the Ranger wing there are male quick release buckles which buckle into buckles on the Ranger harness. These keep the wing from wrapping up around a single tank. Well I found the same buckles at REI. I just mounted the female end on a strap connected to the waist belt of my BP and clipped the wing in.
I use this combo for both my small set of doubles and also for single tank diving using the cam straps off the Ranger BC. Whether diving singles or doubles it feels much more stable than the Ranger BC and I've experienced no air trapping.
Plus, if you find you like the combo, you can put your Ranger back together, ebay it and then buy another wing. This was my plan until I realized there aren't a whole lot of 40-45lb lift wings to choose from out there so I'll just keep this setup. Once I get a larger set of doubles I'll get a bigger wing but for these small 80's, the Ranger wing is all I need.
