Basically, a crotch strap helps keep the BC from "riding up" on you. Some people have a problem with that, some people simply like having it on there, and some people have no need for one. I, for one, never use one and have no "riding up" issues. If your BC fits well and you don't notice any riding up, you can probably do without...
