Scott and everybody else,

I have a new Zeagle Escape (size M). I bought a Zeagle Spare Air Pocket, Model 8055L which "Mounts on any Zeagle BC", according to the website. Can you recommend the best way to attach it to my Escape? It has a nylon strap on the back with a pair of grommet holes at the top and at the bottom. It doesn't really match any of the grommets on the BC, except for in front of the pocket on the non-weight release side of the BC.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,
David

P.S. This is my first post to Scubaboard.com, although I have been reading it for a bit. Thanks for the great information. I hope to pay it forward, now that I am registered.

Hello David, and welcome to ScubaBoard (You guys didn't know I was a "greeter", did ya! ;) )

The spot you described is the best place to mount it. If you use the open grommet hole under the black triangle with the "Z" on it for one screw, and angle it up along the pocket, the other grommet should match up for the second screw fastener.

A second way of doing it is to run your cummerbund through the webbing on the back of the 8055L, and match up either the top grommet or the bottom grommet to hold it in place. This will give you a vertical hang, rather than an angled one.

If my descriptions are "lacking", let me know and I will try a different method. :crafty:

Dive safe!!

Thanks for the advice. I had tried the angled position and will checkout the cummerbund attachment. I didn't like the angled position because it interferes with the d-ring and pockets, and I prefer a side location.

The third option that I developed was to locate the 8055L on the same side, where the air cell attaches to the harness. There is wide a nylon triangle with a plastic clip on the middle side of the air cell that attaches it to the side of the vest. I attached that through the strap on the 8055L. At the bottom of the air cell is the end of one of the bungies which clips to the aircell or vest (can't remember which). I attached this through the 8055L strap. The Spare Air is then located at my side, behind the pockets, under my arm and it can't shift up or down. So far this is my favorite position.

If anybody else has an idea, please post.

Thanks
David

That sounds like a spot that will work, as well!

I will take a look at it!

Dude, e-bay the six breaths till death, then buy the Zeagle pony straps, a pony bottle and cheap reg set so in the rare event you will need an altenate air souce you'll actually have enough air to get you to the surface.

Your telling me you would trust your life to a cheap reg set? It jsut seems that you back up system should be able to be used when needed.

A cheap reg is still a reg provided it works. Nowadays all regs work well enough to do what you want them to do - breath. The question of whether or not yours will work in any situation is directly proportional to how well you maintain it.

I guess I should have said inexpensive reg set. The spare air is one of the biggest frauds purpetrated on the scuba community. My wife bought one for me before I started the BOW class and I brought it with me to the pool portion. In the classroom the instuctor explained that at a depth of 80 feet, depending on your lung capacity, you might get 2 breaths from the spare air 3, far less than the 50 + in the ad that my wife read. Luckily, I was able to return it for a full refund, bought a 19 pony and the Zeagle straps and a used MK5 G250 from a buddy and still had money left over. Speaking of cheap, what could be cheaper than the 2nd stage on the spare air?
I don't write this to disparage anyone, I too felt from the beging that a redundent 1st and 2nd as well as another air source is a prudent thing to carry. My pony setup is just like the fire extinguisher in my kitchen, I hope I never have to use it. Your buddy is your spare air, for sure, but we all have lost contact with our buddies for a few min. and that is when the sh#t seems to hit the fan.
