Hello,
I have an A40 in a case and a D-Rebel with no housing yet. I have a job coming up and I am interested in using a YS-90 because hopefully when I get a housing for my Rebel the YS-90 will make the transition better than say a YS-25. Anyway what is the difference between all the YS-90's? I've an Auto, DX, and Duo (link below). I plan on using the fiber optic cable for the A40, but I want to use a TTL for the rebel. Any thoughts?
Thanks,

Anyone know? I am desperate for an answer. I bought the YS-90 auto, but on digitaldiver.net they say it isn't ttl compatible. I was hoping to use this strobe with the ikelite housing for the digital rebel. Is it possible?
Thanks,

The YS-90 Auto is like a 'external auto' strobe - it has an exposure sensor built into the strobe that determins how bright the strobe should be to get the correct exposure - ie the camera doesn't control the strobe. I haven't heard very good reports about this strobe.

In your case none of the strobes will work in TTL with the Digital Rebel as it uses a different TTL protocol (eTTL).

If you have decided to house the Rebel with an Ike housing and you want TTL then my suggestion is to go for an Ikelite strobe (DS-50 or DS-125). Ike has implemented an eTTL conversion circuitary that allows you to use these two strobes in TTL. Make sure you get strobes produced post Sept 2004 as they have been optimised for eTTL (see footnote: http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/ucanonettl.html).

To use a DS-50 or DS-125 with your current setup (A40) the Ikelite manual EV controller is recommended (http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/mansensors.html)

ReyeR,
u suggested a Ikelite strobe (DS50, DS125), would the DS50 be suitable for the digital rebels as in would it be sufficiently strong?

Also, how would u compare the ikelite strobe with the Inon 220z? that's suitable for TTL too right?

The DS50 will be ok for most applications but the DS125 is recommended.

The Z220 and 220S is a smaller, lighter, compact strobe and packs a lot of punch. But it will not work in TTL with the Ikelite 300D housing - only the DS-125 and DS-50 will. If you are going to house the Rebel with the Ike housing and you want TTL your most logical choice will be the Ikelite strobes.

If you want to read about how different strobes compare read this pdf: http://www.digitaldiver.net/images/strobearticle/strobearticlescrn2.pdf and this pdf: http://www.scubacam.com.sg/pages/Strobe Test.pdf.
