I find myself slowly emerging from the denial that no matter how much I whine, complain, hold my breath and stamp my feet, I will continue to get older every year. At one time I actually thought I would not get older by simply not acknowledging my birthdays... but that didn't work.

Some of my friends embrace their birthdays, as they did as kids moving from 6 to 7, or as youths moving from 15 to 16. I hate those people.

And making those around me who love me miserable about my getting older doesn't help. Me hating myself for not accomplishing more, or amounting to more, or making a larger splash in this ocean of life doesn't help. I'm getting older, and if I'm drawing breath, I can't change that.

It sucks. I'm dealing.

So I take stock - I'm in better shape than I was 10 years ago, I'm healthy, I have a loving and growing marriage to my sweet wife, me and God are tight - all of the essentials that are not subject to negotiation are all in line.

It still sucks getting older.

I'm not as bitter as I was last year, and surely not as bitter as the year before. I'm dealing. This year, however, I find myself firmly ensconched in the "over 40 crowd". A couple of years ago I was "pinkie toe" over 40. Last year I knee deep. This year, I am really over 40. Jeeze - in a couple I'll be in my mid-40's... I'm forewarning you all, I'll be pretty bitter when I cross that milestone in my walker.

Actually, I live pretty much as a kidult. I really want for nothing. I have no worries. I have no complaints - except that I hate getting older. This I continue to fight. I will not be the one aging gracefully.

So a bunch of us were recently on shore leave during a 3 day boat dive. We went into town (Descanso beach, for you Avalon Locals) and set up on the corner, watching the hotties dance, listening to the guy spin and just hanging out with a cigar and a diet pepsi (did I mention getting older sucks....?)

And we're laughing at the tunes, and started discussing how old we all felt. So the question came up...

"you know you're old when..."

I looked over the crowd dancing, and my answer was simple.

You know you're old when: When this song was out, I was the same age as these people dancing - except I was in a cover band playing this song - probably playing to their parents.

Happy Birthday...

From another one over 40 ..but I'm used to it already.

:balloon:

You're having one of those absolutely wonderful WHO DA MAN,
YOU DA MAN days...you go to wink at yourself in the mirror &
you don't recognize the guy staring back at you.;)

It still sucks getting older

Dying sucks, illness sucks, getting older and staying healthy is fine by me.

You know you're getting old when you can't get out of a chair without making some kind of noise.

Worse one was when I was seeing a young lass and her mother was coming to town. She was looking for a good rate and I mentioned the Ramada was having an AARP special. She punched me and said her mother wasn't THAT old. I decided not to mention I read it in my copy of AARP magazine.

Actually, I live pretty much as a kidult. I really want for nothing. I have no worries. I have no complaints - except that I hate getting older. This I continue to fight. I will not be the one aging gracefully.

vanishing from the radar at the mall etc. I am 40, and I remember walking through the mall and realizing that I had entered the great unseen mass of "no potential for nuthin"!

Well, you can take comfort that I am, and will continue to be, slightly older than you! ;)

get to my mid life crisis but I don't have time!

Ken

and remember, you're only as old as....

...your body tells you at 8:00 in the morning. :(

P.S. -- I got my mid-life crisis out of the way a few years ago. LOL
