I am new to diving (12 ow dives), but have experienced lots of rental gear problems and would like to have my own (starting with regulators).

Mostly I will travel and dive in warm waters to max depths of 80 feet. Occasionally, I will dive in Monterey CA.

I have reviewed the posts on this site regarding regulators and am somewhat overwhelmed. That said, my local shop (who I would like to support) sells they XS Scuba Trimetal (first and second stages) for $390.

Is this a reasonably good price?

Is there a significantly better option?

Thanks,
Chris

You might find better answers here in the Scubaboard regulator forum.

I have the trimetal and have used it on about 20 dives in varied conditions from cold water to warm. So far I have no complaints. It is inexpensive, breathes easy, and I have dove to about 90' with it. Prior to this I had a titanium reg that I had loaned to someone, and he cleaned it in a pool without capping the 1st stage and it corroded. Needless to say that was about a $900 reg with only about 35 dives on it. I hadn't noticed much difference between the 2, but most of my diving is rather shallow, and usually in warm water, with an occasional trip to Monterey, or Catalina.

I am new at this (no surprise). Should I just re post in the regulator section? I have looked through it and couldn't find an answer to whether $390 for the regulator was in line with the market.

$390 sounds like a fair price. You can probably find it a bit cheaper online, but I prefer to shop locally if there isn't a big price difference.

Retail is $400. Scuba.com has it for $359.95 and free shipping. For a less than 10 percent premium, you might consider using your local shop. Especially if they will service it in the future for free or for a discount if you buy it there, which might save money in the long run.

I love mine. 80 plus dives, no issues. Biggest test (not a big test by others' standards) for me was 90 plus feet at 51 degrees with no problems. Also works great in the tropics.

is that $390 for the 1st/2nd stage alone, or does it include the Octo also?

If it includes the Octo, then it might not be a bad deal. But for $390 for just the basic reg, I personally think that $390 is a little high.

You can pick it up from Dive Sports for $300 and get a free regulator bag also it appears..... I'm sure some other dealers have it for similar prices if you look.

As for this reg, It actually scored very well in ScubaDiving Magazines "Muscle Reg" review a couple years ago when compared to Aqualung, Apeks, Atomic, Zeagle, etc

The Trimetal has some very good reviews...... For what it worth. Sorry Mike, I didn't read the above post. So Ditto!
