Diving. Two choices XTC Divers who have the permit for Chinchorro Diving and there is a shop at Costa de Cocos as well. Most diving is within a few miles of town going either north or south. Spur and grove formations. You are exposed to the weather though right now it should be fairly calm so its a good time if you want to make the run to Chinchorro (they require a minium of divers for that trip)
Places to stay. If you have a car then various B&B places outside of town. I like Costa de Cocos which is about a mile from town. Tierra Maya is another choice or if you are on the cheap there is a small hotel in town very basic and no AC. For that matter no AC at Costa de Cocos but good fans and you are on the water.
Getting there. If you drive its easy. From Tulum 3 or so hours. You might be stopped by the military on the drive but its no big deal. If you bus it then go to Chetumal and get the bus to Xcalak. No idea on the schedule.

I just got back from Xcalak and highly recommend the trip and XTC diving for your diving needs. Augustus pretty much gave you the information that you need. We stayed at Tierra Maya and I definitely recommend staying with them, contact Kim or Eduardo for details; hoteltierramaya@yahoo.com. Jeane is the office manager at XTC Diving; reserve@xtcdivecenter.com. Driving down from Tulum can be done in three-three and a half hours, but currently there are a lot of improvements to the carretera through the jungle so expect some delays and plan a 4 hour window for the trip. Besides you will want to stop in the town central louncheria at Fillipe Carrillo Puerto for a delicious cheap lunch. Also, fill up at the Pemex in Mahahual, since there is no gas station in Xcalak. The Leaky Palapa in town serves Cuisine on Friday and Saturday nights, definitely the best food in town and you will see most of the expats there, we had to park a bit down the road LOL the whole town only has 300 people. It is incredible there because the ocean is amazing the diving is incredible and the people are very friendly.
