The arrows show that I broke one of my left carpel wrist bones.

Saturday, we went to a fun park with laser tag, putt-putt, arcade games, and batting cages. After many hours of fun, we decided to go to the batting cage; something I had really looked forward too. We spent a bit of time there before the cages began to fill up and the pitching machine began to have problems. A technician had to come and reset the machine while I was up to bat. The very next pitch came flying out so hard that I dodge and voiced how I couldn’t believe it. The next pitch I nailed. As I made contact with the ball, my left wrist, on the bottom of the grip as I am right-handed, popped. At that moment, the butt end of the bat hit me on the outside wrist bone. I hit the next two pitches but it hurt really badly. I turned around and said, “I think I broke my wrist two hits ago.” And was met with understandable disbelief. I held up my wrist was turning black and blue and we watched it swell before our eyes. SJ immediately insisted on going to the emergency room. He got a bag of ice, gathered up my son and his friend, and we left. After, a great deal of pain, a few x-rays, and several hours, we were shown the x-rays revealing two distinct fractures in the scaphoid, I believe that’s it, bone. I was placed in a temp cast until Monday. The ortho Dr. put me in a spika-splint sp? until next Tuesday, when he will x-ray the wrist again and decided how long I am to wear a cast. He’s thinking a couple months. So, I am already asking about a dive able cast once the healing begins. I am hoping that after 4-6 weeks I can at least do shore/drift dives if I am careful and have help with my gear from my buddy. I have to get well in a hurry because I am/we are supposed to go to the Keys in October. Almost exactly six weeks from the date of the accident.

Do any of you know anything about dive able braces or casts?

So sorry to hear about your accident. I don't have any info on braces or casts for you. I hope you heal soon.

That's terrible news Raven. I hope you heal in time for your Keys trip. Maybe you should post your cast question in the Dive Medicine forum. Good Luck!

Scott

I'm really sorry to hear that, Raven. That really sucks! The only thing I can think of would be some kind of air cast or something along those lines. You might try a medical supply store and see if they can recommend something for your doctor to prescribe for you.

Good luck! I hope this doesn't affect your Keys trip. Wish I was going to the Keys...:(

Thanks guys.

And ScottyK that's a good point. I am checking into a resin cast currently.

OK here's the X-rays. The one on the right shows the two breaks.

Let's see if this works. R

Nope it is too big maybe I can figure something else out. R

Sorry about the accident. It especially hurts when it keeps you from doing other things. You might be able to dive with the thing on. Check with your doctor. She might have casting options that allow you to dive. Some casts are removeable and are therefore cleanable.

I broke my leg ( patella actually) in university while on spring break. No, I wasn't partying in Florida, I tripped over a bag of potatoes at home but I"m not going into that right now. :D

Anyway, I had a full leg cast for only a week. The other 2 months, I used kind of like a long brace. The doctor gave it to me because it was lighter and he knew I had to walk to school everyday. I can attest to how much that sucks in the middle of a Canadian winter.

RavenC darlin', I feel for you!! That totally bites!!

How fast do you think you could get a trilam drysuit with latex wrist seals and dry gloves? Try for the diveable cast first!

I think we deserve the truth RavenC. The reason SJ insisted on going to the emergency room is because he felt somewhat responsible for you breaking your wrist.

There are many techniques to utilize when holding a bat, your lucky your hand didn't slip off in the heat of the moment.

That and all the balls whizzing by...geez, what is a girl to do.

;)

I believe it is derived from a unique mixture of aboriginal and old English expressions, with some French mixed in.

"That is Sucky."

If you want to get really authentic, you can also say:

"That is well and truly sucky."

(Pron: That is well and TRUE-lee SUCK-ee"

I'm sorry to hear about it. I hope you heal quick.

RavenC,
My best dive buddy, Natasha (who moderates a travel board her (shameless plug), told me of your accident. Last August I put three fractures on the wrist end of my radius. The bad part was my dive trip 4 weeks later! Luckily I found exactly what you are looking for...

www.castliner.com

They are a spin-off of the Gore-Tex people. For a few bucks they send you a pillowy gore-tex based material that is used for the cast padding. Then you use the normal fiberglass like cast material that all orthos use today. Viola! A fantastic cast. I took mine to Bonaire for 16 dives. It was awesome. You just rinse it in the shower when you're done diving. Even without the diving I would suggest this product. It is very comfortable and much better than the alternatives.

Now the down side. Your dive shop might not let you dive with it. Liability of course. They may let you pay for a personal DM, or just have you do a special checkout. Talk to them first.

The other down side (and this is unsubstanciated info) is that there may be evidence that diving with a broken bone can cause a locallized DCS injury on the break point leading to necrotic deterioration (that section of bone may die). This is based on some studies going on in Canada using sheep. I have no other info (ie. how often, deep etc.) but I figure that I'm a casual diver and I've dove with other injuries (cuts, bruises etc) and nothing on me is dead yet!

Anyway, good luck and speedy recovery!

Denton

PS. I have no affiliation with the cast-liner people other than they saved my dive trip!
