I am in the market for a simple to use computer, not sure if it would be better to purchase a console mounted or wrist setup. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, just turned 45 and got my first pair of reading glasses, so easy to read would be helpful.

Thanks
MRK

Hi Mark!

I enjoy using a wrist mounted. I keep it on my right wrist, which is usually out in front of me, so I can see it easily with just a quick glance. No big brick of a gage console to hang or drag or hold up to see.

I also like that fact that I can use my left hand for light, or BC inflator/deflator or drysuit inflation and still see my wrist mounted gage. This is a big advantage while ascending and dumping air from my BC and keeping one eye on my depth.

I have the opposite opinion of Rick. I like my console...don't like stuff strapped to my wrist. Check out this link to posts about air integrated or not. Folks were talking about console vs. wrist. Maybe it will help.

Both systems have their merits. It's really a matter of personal taste. Since wrist boots are relativly cheap try a wrist mount first and if you don't like it you can go console later.

I don't have a great suggestion for the reading glasses issue. But I too suggest wrist mounts. I like not having the extra hose to worry about. It's nice knowing exactly where your guage is.

that said, it isn't nice to have a big console if you have things to carry or strap to yourself (like a dive light). I'd consider what you'll usually be diving with. If you won't have too much baggage, I'd got with the wrist mount. if you will have a lot ot hold on to, I'd use the hose. It makes it more dynamic as to what you have have in front of you at any given moment.

I just like the wrist mount because I can take it without my reg setup. For instance, if I am on a trip and don't feel like packing gear or if I should have a problem with my rig, I still have my computer.

For Wrist mount
I have a console mount today, but am considering switching to wrist. One of the reasons is, with wireless I can reduce to 2 hoses, reduce drag etc.
I don't use :seen: yet (50+) so today that is not a problem, however I expect my kit to last for 10+ years so I want to ensure it clear and easy to read today.
I have my backup depth and time in my watch which I wear on every dive.

For console mounts
If it wasn't for nitrox I would keep my current setup. Once I clip my console onto my BC, I know exactly where it is, everything is in one package, I cannot enter the water without my computer because it is in my console. It cannot fall off without me knowing all about it. I know that watch straps can break and then it's bye bye computer.
Oh yes, thats another question where will I put my backup computer if I switch to a wrist mount. I will, probably keep my reliable old sherwood secret it somewhere in my BC.

I used to agree with bennedc. I also hated to have stuff on my wrist. I still prefer to not wear a watch.

But I switched my (9 years) console to a wrist and I love it. It's so easy to see depth/time and all that, since my arms are out in front of me. And I'm no longer dragging around that that soap-on-a-rope brick-on-a-string that my console had become.

About the only time I'd not wear it on my right wrist is if I went lobster hunting and had to reach into rocky holes. Them I might just have to move it to my LEFT wrist. :D
