Supernal:
I've been using wrist & ankle weights while doing low-impact aerobics to a DVD at home. Will this actually improve muscle strength? Can it do any harm? How about hand-held weights?

Doing any activity with additional resistance will improve muscle strength. However, doing movements not designed specifically for wrist and ankle weights while wearing these can put too much stress on your joints. Additionally, real strength gains will require more resistance (i.e., weight) than is reasonable to apply with wrist and ankle weights.

There are many "tone" and "sculpt" programs available on DVD that combine both aerobic and strength training movements into one workout that you might enjoy. This would likely result in better strength gains than what you're doing now.
