If you want guaranteed healthy corals, just fly to the red sea for a week. Lots of weekly flights with sleezyjet ;)

I'm mostly a wreck diver where there are no living corals (but that's b/c I live in the gulf)...so when I DO get a chance to travel and dive on healthy living coral I love it. However, I don't think I would pay more for any certain dive just to include healthy coral. I'm happy with the dive opportunities I currently have and don't think it needs any changing :)

Diving is my passion...I live to dive!

You'd have to refine your definition of healthy. Is the Red Sea healthy? Indonesia kicks it's butt. Flower Garden Banks has the healthiest reef in the world, but I just don't see it becoming a major tourist destination anytime soon. A healthy reef includes lots of fish, from algae eaters to the folks that eat the algae eaters.

I've seen lots of healthy reefs, and usually the dead ones are a result of a natural event or sewage. So, what are you getting at?

How would paying more guarantee healthy coral?

Would the additional expense be used to pay for improved sewage disposal at the resort?

I could probably go along with a modest increase

If paying a bit more (less than 25% more) got me a trip to a place with more healthy coral, then maybe.

For example, I was at Punta Cana. Diving there is mediocre, with lots of dead coral but still decent diving and a good amount of fish. However, I decided to spend a little more to travel a few hours to Bayahibe to dive, where the coral reefs are live, vibrant, and filled with life.

I guess you're going to have to balance between cost (time and money) and how much better the reef will be there. Different people have different balances.

Yes, I am more than willing to pay more for things to assure the healthy sustainable use of resources. But that has nothing to do with diving. I don't pay to dive, I get paid to dive, and that's different.

Hey guys, thanks for your feed back so far!
I am meaning healthy coral like in Indonesia, with the fish life that comes with it!
The extra expence could be used to ensure ( as best as could be) the amount of dives allowed on the site, it could be set up as a marine park. so the extra would go on the upkeep of that park.

hope this helps clarify what i was meaning.

That hardly guarantees anything except employment for the people collecting the fees.

To really guarantee anything like what was mentioned in the first post you are going to need to build a big aquarium.
