I'd have no problem lending weights/weight belt/fins if I had them spare but regs/BC not unless I really knew the person well and was sure they would take as much care with them as I would.

Some weights yea sure, i have let a student use a spare
mask i had but that is about it. I dont have the money right now to have a backup for everything for one and two if i were to give up a backup i wouldnt have it when i need it.
So no basically i dont let others use my gear, my girlfriend being the exception. The ONE time i did let someone use my depth gauge i got it back broken.

Not to forget the whole liability issue, if someone borrows a light from you and they kill themselves on the dive the family might come sue YOU because they blame it on the light not being the right color!!:upset:

Because I teach and own a shop I carry lots of extra gear and often loan it when needed to save someones dive. I should probably rent it but usually don't. There is some of my personal stuff that even family members no better than to touch.

Most seem to say they would donate their backup gear...

What if something happened to the person that was using it?

Again, just a thought. I don't want anyone to think negatively about being generous by any means, but have you ever thought about this? Curious about what you all have to say.

Just because its backup doesnt mean it doesnt get cared for. It just means its not my newest, best of the best gear. Since i just started last year, even my backup set is still only a year old. I would certainly never give anyone some gear that i thought was less than in perfect condition (its my backup gear, so if my primary gear goes, i have to use this gear as well).

I give away small items, such as repair items (o-rings, straps, batteries, etc...).

I would loan other small items to just about anyone. The criteria would be whether I really care about getting it back.

I loan my back-up gear only when I know that I will be able to find the person again. People who dive out of my lds or people on the same boat are good examples.

My own personal gear is not available except to my two regular dive buddies. That doesn't include my computer.

The liability question is interesting. IMHO, a person who loans out gear could, under the right circumstances, be held liable for injuries caused by the failure of the gear. Thus, for example, loaning an old BC that I knew or should have known had a faulty dump or a bad inflator could be problematic. Similarly, loaning a tank of Nitrox strikes me as a bad idea because the new diver might be relying upon my analysis.

One other thought that occurs to me is whether people, particularly lds owners and others who regularly loan equipment, ask for a C-card if they don't have personal knowledge that the borrower is certified (students are a whole different world). I don't, but I don't often loan equipment and, when I do, it is almost always to someone I know.

The issue in these cases is what would a reasonable person have done under the circumstances. Reasonable people might inquire whether the borrower should be using the equipment and at least look at the equipment to make sure that it appears to be in good order.

O.K., but what about your computer?

If it was your back up, and you were on a trip somewhere, wouldn't you be wearing it so it had the correct info? If you carried it but didn't wear it then you would still have to sit out until you were completely desaturated before you could resume diving.

No, no matter how cute she was, she can't borrow my computer. If she even asked it would indicate to me that there was a serious lack of understanding...

I was always willing to lend out anything, as long as they were on my boat. I have never been asked at a quarry. I typically carry spare gear, that is not really backup. My wife and son both dive the same regs and computer as me, so I usually bring one of their sets as a backup, especially the computer.

But now, that observation about liability has me concerned:confused:

Today I have already been reminded several times that no good deed goes unpunished!
