Saw it on the news last night. Big sucker...

Somehow, I doubt the struggle lasted 10 minutes. She probabably saw it, screwed around long enough to get attacked, and then got bit. The whole sequence lasted 10 but the actual attack lasted less than a couple. After more than 1 or 2 and she'd be dead. Sounds like typical media hype as usual to me.

Andy - I'm going to correct you here:

Miami's WSVN television said the unidentified woman was ambushed by the alligator while landscaping on Sanibel Island, off Florida's Gulf Coast around 180 miles northwest of Miami.

This is a semi annual occurance on Sanibel. I applaud the alligator for choosing not so simple prey, but this one didn't have a dog on a string attached to it like the last dozen or so.

The problem is the City of Sanibel and Lee County keep issuing permits to build houses on Sanibel, which is literally a large estuary (J N "Ding" Darling). These aren't cheap houses either, we're talking in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for the small cheap things. At any rate, don't be surprised to see more of these as people continue to put houses on the edges of alligator holes such as this one was. Jenny can attest, that island is literally centered around the wildlife refuge. :)

good catch, Colin, as to location... thanks for the local info

A little follow up from the Fox news tonight - the lady was cutting a branch over water where it was known that alligators are known to inhabit. The bull gator that looked up and saw this lady was a 400# bull gator measuring in at 12' in length. From the time neighbors called 911 to the time officers were on scene was approximately 4 minutes, it was almost 5 minutes into things by the time she was out of the water, and the gator was not going to give up that easy. It charged out of the water in pursuit of the middle aged human meal which resulted officers shooting it twice before it stopped.

Wounds were sustained on the arm and buttox and probably a full body trauma she'll feel for a long time to come.

Note: Approximately 300 alligators call Sanibel home. :)

I read a story awhile back about how a man hit his wife with a alligator and then threw beer cans at her. at first it was humerous, and then i got thinking, jow long as the alligtor, that puppy could have done some seriosu damage.

Only us nuts in Florida would hang out by a gator infested hole and keep a baby gator in our tubs. Sheeze!!
