Wings

Being an old mossback diver I have used the old At Pac (with and without shell), the ScubaPro BCP, and ScubaPro Classic Jacket and similar equipment from other manufactures. I had a Jacket since they came out in the late 70s/80s and when mine was stolen in the mid 90s I replaced it in kind with the Classic Jacket. I didn't like the way the back mounted floatation forced me face down on the surface nor did I like when swimming horizontal the way the wings would float above the tank requiring me to change my position more vertical to get air out.

I am curious if the more new back mounted wings I see so popular with tech divers have the same characteristics as I saw with the older back mounted floatation. Can anyone shed some light?

its all about having the right sized wing, putting it in the right place on your back, and having the right technique. Makes all those problems go away.

Being pushed forward on the surface is a product of having the air cell ride too high behind you, and having a positive tank in back with all the necessary weights in the front. With a crotch strap (which almost everyone uses with backplate and wing setups) and not using integrated weights that are on your waist, the problem essentially doesn't exist.

Having the right SIZED wing means that the air can't get very far away from one of the two dump sites -- inflator or rear dump -- and you rarely have to break trim much, if at all, to vent.
