I wear all black, but likewise have never seen a shark in over 750 dives-NY, NJ, FL, Carib., etc. Oh, btw, I wear split fins, can't back kick with them (well, didn't give it much of a try), hate the idea of ever seeing a shark, BUT, don't own SpareAir…..

How very sad that you've missed out on diving with sharks for so long.

This one didn't seem to mind that I was wearing split fins on this dive

I love the new use of a dive buddy........when the shark comes, fin like crazy to take cover behind your dive buddy.......or the first buddy you see. :rofl3: :rofl3:

Watch the video to see what I'm talking about.

Not much contrast if you are 30m below. Everything is more or less blue to me at least.

You are probably right, I think someone mentioned this is mostly a risk when you are closer to the surface.

It had probably just finished eating someone with a spare air.

When you're at the surface, you look like a snack. When you're underwater, (especially when you're blowing bubbles) you don't look appetizing at all. That is a big factor in why surfers get bitten and divers do not.

I've read about how split fins suck for a while and you can't frog kick, etc.,! I've dived with Scubapro Jets and more recently switched to Atomic X1 paddle fins which I like a lot- very powerful fins. However, I tried a set of Atomic Smoke on the Water split fins on my last Cayman trip in July and they were really good - no issue with frog kicking at all and no issue with subtle control either. They are also quite powerful, yet very easy/low effort, even in modest current (no idea how they would do in strong current, though). My advice is to take the split fin hate with a grain of salt.

From various reviews I've read, users I've talked to, etc, I think the Atomic split fins may be somewhat of the exception to the rule. Not sure what is different that makes them "better" than other splits.

They're no doubt fine, for a single tank dive with no current. Now go try that with doubles, a couple stages, and some current. And don't forget to back fin a few times, too. I have yet to see anyone back fin with any real success using split fins. Maybe you're just that special one in a million?

I can back kick with no fins on at all. I don't get a whole buncha thrust that way, but I can slowly and steadily move backwards. Single tank or doubles doesn't matter, of course. Just a little slower with doubles. I've only done it in a pool, for practice. Any current would surely be too much to handle (with no fins on).

I have never swam (swum? swimmed?) split fins, but it seems like if I can back up with no fins I would be able to back up with splits. Just probably not very quickly....

Anyway, I am definitely not trying to restart the splits vs blades debate! Just saying that splits do have their place in the world of scuba and I think they may not be QUITE as bad as what some people claim. I haven't tried them, so I'm not going to knock them (too much). :) And, thanks, @Joneill, for giving some real-world feedback on them.
