Wind Dancer Captains Log: Christmas Week 2011 & New Years 2012
Water temp: 77F 25°C
This week all of our guests came from China and our crossing to the island took around 34 hours. Upon arrival we did our check out dive at Manuelita Garden, really nice and colorful, where we saw eagle rays & marble rays right in front of us. The next 2 dives were at Manuelita again but on the deep side of the rock. It was here where we saw our first school of hammerheads, at least 40 were there!!!!!!!!!
The next morning we moved from Chatham Bay to Wafer Bay and dove Dirty Rock and Punta Maria. Both sites had great hammerhead action coming in groups of 5. At Punta Maria we dove with 2 Galapagos Sharks very close to us. The third dive was at Manuelita deep, and again the hammerheads were there as was a Tiger Shark, a big female. The third day we headed to Alcyone knowing that anything can happen and it did ! We saw one of the biggest schools of jackfish ever! The hammerheads were also there swimming around us and following our bubbles into the blue .
On day four the first dive was early at Dos Amigos and fantastic many hammerheads, eels, octopuses and there seemed to be a ray everywhere we looked. The second dive was to the other Dos Amigos which has a sandy bottom. There were lots of white tips laying on the sand and there was a steady parade of hammerheads cruising over the sand at about 55 feet.
Our final day at the island we did three dives, one at Alcyone with lots of hammerheads and yellowfin tunas hunting around. The second dive at Dirty Rock was perfect for ending the trip with schools of hammerheads getting up close, dolphins, at least a dozen silky sharks and a school of thousands of trevallies. Dive 3 at Dirty Rock had more than 50 hammerheads swimming just 1 meter (3 feet) from us.
We are going into dry dock for refurbishment so plenty of maintenance and no diving for the crew until March 4th. Please check back mid March for our next exciting episode and watch Facebook for dry dock updates.
Safe Diving to all of you!
