She will be from lugging all that lead! Otherwise it is individual and woman tend to say they are cold, even with an extra layer of fat! So go figure! Also depends on how many dives per day!

Buddy you said that on the internet. Also if you really want her to be hot spend a little more money for crying out loud. Also it really depends on some things, but certain dive op dive masters think our wives are hot so maybe pm a few people for some tips. Sure hope you have fun. I love Cozumel, just got to watch out for the amorous dive masters.:D

I agree, we could provide more help if we had some pictures of your wife :D

My blood is used to tropical climates. At present I am wearing a full 5mm suit with a 3mm vest under it and am freezing at the end of the 2nd dive (60-80 minute dives). I am getting ready to break out the 7mm. If your lady gets too warm she can always pull the hood off her head and let some water into the suit. IMHO she will be happy she has the 7mm. The air temps are low and it is breezy. It would be a good idea to bring thermal protection for the SI. A sweatshirt should do it.

We are off to Cozumel this Feb and my wife has a 6.5mm wetsuit with integrated hood - I am worried she may be too hot in it.

Am I needlessly worried - or should I pony up the $100 it will cost to get her a 3mm suit?

Lots of responses, but none that really give you what you need to make the determination for exposure protection. The answer is - "it all depends."

The real question you need answered is what are the water temps? Everyone's tolerance to cold and tendency to chill are different. While one person may be comfortable in a 3mm shorty, the diver next to you may still be cold in a full 5mm with a hooded vest.

The CURRENT water temps are running 76º - 78ºF - I expect them to be about the same in February.

Other things to consider are:
How many dives per day are you planning?
How many days in a row are you planning to dive?
What are/were the water temps on her last set of dives and what was she wearing? Was she cold or too warm?

Hope this helps you with your answer :)

EDIT: Appears that Mike and I were posting at the same time! Definitely bring a sweatshirt or something for the SI if your op doesn't provide them.

it's almost like we are all saying a similiar thing, while waiting for the OP to return . . . :rofl3:

She doesn't get cold too easily. And we are planning on 2 dives a day for 5 days in a row + a couple of night dives. So about 12 dives in 5 days.

Her last comparable dive was in the Med in 26C (79F) water at surface / 17C (62F) at 100FT and she was toasty in her wetsuit.

Then again, she is toasty in 49F Monterey water too with the same suit + a 5.5m shorty on top... While I freeze solid in the metridium fields...

The weight issue is one I had not thought about as is the 'other' form of 'hotness'. I think a 3mm would be advantageous in both those cases... :-)

There a so many factors (where does the diver live full time...what is their body fat ratio....how many dives per day....some people chill easier than others...etc) in what mm wetsuit that you can't really judge for someone else. You can only give your personal experience and hope that it is helpful.

Agree, a 3mm, or a 3mm and a core vest with hood. it is better to be warm then cold.

It is possible to get too hot. In the summer at the quarry the surface was about 78 and then dropped off at 15feet. But I could barrley stand the temperature at the top, it wasn't uncomfortable. I did unzip the wetsuit as other people stated.

From the info you Gave I think a 3mm would be nice. They are much easier to pack and get on and off.

she will probably be just fine. I was there last March and used a 5mm suit and a hood and it was perfect. The water was 77-79 degrees every dive and since I don't move around alot (flapping arms, kicking against current, etc.) I can get cold on a dive. We did 2 boat dives in morning, then after lunch a shore dive or night dive each day.

If she does feel a bit warm, all she has to do is pull the neck out and flush her suit underwater. It will cool her off.
