Has anyone ever been successful at having Delta check your bags through on a partner ticket. For example:

I'm flying Delta from Anchorage to Houston first class on 1 ticket. Then I have tickets on Continental from Houston to Bonaire.

Delta and Continental are Skymiles partners. It was suggested to me on Flyer talk forum that I ask the ticket agent here in Anchorage to check my bags through to Bonaire using my eticket number and confirmation.

Otherwise, when we get to Houston we will have to retrieve our bags to get them checked in. Then have to endure security again. Problem is that we will be arriving several hours prior to the flight and we will have to sit around with our bags until we hit the 4 hour mark and can check in again. Sitting around the part of the airport with no bars I bet...

I've flown on Delta many times with split tickets, most recently with Delta and Finnair which are not skymiles partners. Your situation will not be a problem. Delta will check them all the way thru for you to Bonaire. As I said, I've done this many times and my bag always goes thru. The luggage receipt they give you will show that it got checked all the way thru.

Delta and Continental share a baggage interline agreement. Make sure you show your CO ticketing in ANC. You didn't specify the layover time which 'may' come into play but four hours should be no problem. DL's baggage rules are on their website under 'Contract of Carriage' if you can decipher it.

Have fun.

The length of layover is going to depend. If I do the SLC-IAH route then we are looking at something like 8 hours from arrival to departure. BUt I'm also considering an open jaw ticket through Newark which would give us a shorter layover time. But I only want to do Newark if I can avoid going through security there. I really don't want to deal with ignorant Jersey TSA people who may not like our canister lights (I grew up in North Jersey and have a persistent prejudice for people in power there).

Thanks for the info. Very helpful. I have read the CoC and found it not to be very helpful :D

I believe 12 hours (or overnight) is the time limitation for same line or interline baggage transfer. I often fly to AUA through ATL and travel the night before to ATL. Even though my connecting flight is also on Delta, the time frame necessitates collecting baggage and rechecking.

You shouldn't have to go through security (outbound) at EWR unless changing terminals which you would most likely have to do if arriving on DL and departing on CO.

Though it may be worse than reading the CofC, a call to either CO or DL may help!

So I need to find mileage seats on Continental if I want to avoid going through TSA at Newark.

Scubaboard is a more reliable source of airline information than the airlines. Really. Trust me on this one.

There shouldn't be any problem checking your bags through. Well, there's always the chance baggage can get lost even if flying on a nonstop flight. Just one of the joys of flying now.

When you hand over your bags to the agent verify the destination codes on the tag:

IAH for Houston (not HOU, which is Hobby airport in Houston)
***and***
BON for Bonaire on the same tag.

Carry on the equipment that you absolutely insist on having & wouldn't want to substitute with a rental. Just in case....

Happy diving.
