so i have been looking for some computers and i have a question..

i wanted the veo 1.0 3 gage console that is around 432 usd (400 with out). but the mares of the picture that has air integrated is 300 usd and in some places even 279. so my question is why so cheap?

is mares not reliable? they break? any other failures? that i should know, because if i buy the mares i will spend 340 with compass and i will same 100 usd...

what are your thoughts about this?

I guess it is clearance price. The compass adds $150 to the price.

Boy are you getting programmed.

A dive computer is simple, it is the liability you are paying for. A laptop computer does more, has more options, and much more memory but you can often buy them for a lot less than an entry level dive computer.

Course, failing to use my laptop correctly has not resulted in getting bent. No need to carry a monster insurance policy and pass the cost on to the consumer. :D

It's hard to see how big it is, but if it's only a little bigger than a regular SPG if may be a good backup computer and pressure gaugue for a later more expensive color AI wrist computer. Skip the compass and get the wrist Suunto SK7 on the DSS bungee mount (~$80)

you are not just paying for the liability, but for a device that has to be built where it will not fail under all circumstances. You have no OS crashing, no hanging. No US Navy ship getting stranded dead in the water in the middle of the ocean.

you can go buy a simple mil-spec device and it cost 20x a consumer stuff. Dive computers are not milspec or aerospec stuff, but it is also not disposable consumer stuff either.

Well, if things go correctly, my father's Uwatec Smart Z failed mid-dive (to 35m) and forced an immediate surface.

the computer is pretty small, and as you said, yes it will be a great backup computer...

The Mares Puck is a fantastic nitrox capable computer either on the wrist or in a console like this one. My wife loves hers. I had a friend pick one up after diving with a Hollis and cussing at it trying to navigate the menus. It is a ridiculously easy computer to setup and the one button system works well. There are a couple tradeoffs with one button and those are setting the nitrox percentage and scrolling through the log. You cannot backup so if you miss your target you have to scroll back through, but that is the only complaint I have with the unit and it is a very minor one. Easy to setup, easy to use, back lit, durable screen protector included, we have three and none have ever had any kind of an issue and as you noticed it is relatively cheap. Simply put it is a great price on simple but capable piece of diving gear.
