I'm buying my first set of dive gear and just got an Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus. I was curious about the optional quick disconnect feature. Why would you need it? Is it that much of a pain to do the old fashioned way? Also if anyone knows of a good website to buy a console/compass I'd love to know about it. Thanks!!:yea:

The quick disconnect is a very nice feature. I have it on an Aladin. It is great for anytime you pack you gear, as your computer can be kept separate, but quickly attached. Things like traveling; my computer goes carry-on, to download data, and daily storage.
The quick connect is an additional failure point, and I have had to replace the o-ring in mine once, but it is worth it if you are going to use a console I feel.
No help on the source for a compass for it.

Hi Nalu,
First, welcome to the boards, from NJ!
According to the salesman who sold me mine (on an Oceanic Versa Pro console), the Q D is good for:

1.) taking just the console with you to record info to your log book.
2.) taking just the console with you if you want to download info to your "regular" (non dive) computer.
3.) taking just the console with you to keep it "safe".
4.) Simplifying packing.
I haven't applied "2" yet, but the other three reasons seem to be valid.

While I don't feel that there is an absolute need for the QD ( Due to circumstances, I didn't have much of a choice), it isn't a bad thing to have-when it performs as advertised. However, it is another potential "failure point"on your rig.
BTW, unlike "the old fashioned way", most of the HP hose is left attached to the first stage.

Regarding a good website, there are far more experienced "on line shoppers" than me on this board, and I'll defer to them. Usually, where they sell the computer, they sell the console/compass/stc.
{Oceanic has it own website, but as to prices and service, I'm not sure.}

Good luck with your DMPP,
Mike

ps: I see that ,once again my snail-like typing has resulted in other answers getting posted while I "pecked away" :)
pps: I agree with wch's reply.

That clears things up for me...it does sound more convienient. The store I bought my computer from is discontinuing their oceanic line so I got a great deal but they were out of compasses so that is why I am trying to search online. Off to play on google :out:

Have you considered a wrist mounted compass over a console mounted compass? I had the console mounted option, and moved to the wrist mount - much easier for me to use. Borrow a wrist compass and try it out to see what you think before dropping $$$ for the console option. Suunto SK6 and SK7 are both good compasses.

I like the QD personally. When I pack up all my gear, I like to keep the computer in a seperate protective container that it came with. After spending so much $$$ on it, I like it seperate and cushioned. It's nice being able to just have the computer when logging dives, either via PC or in a log book. And, my computer wouldn't fit into the bag I have for my reg.

Overall, I think the convenience is worth the addition of a possible failure point in the quick disconnect.

Nalu once bubbled...
Also if anyone knows of a good website to buy a console/compass I'd love to know about it. Thanks!!:yea:

Leisure Pro sells the compass for your Datamax Pro for $49.95.

I haven't tried any wrist mounted gear but somehow it seems eaiser to me to be able to look at everything in one place. I'll try to see if anyone has one I can try out though... Marc thanks for finding that for me:jump: ...cheaper than any I could find.

not to bust your bubles but look at this polls sems very accurant from other i have talked too this is the percentages of break downs
Suunto 4 12.12%
Oceanic 8 24.24%
Aeris 5 15.15%
Uwatec 5 15.15%
Mares 5 15.15%
Genesis 6 18.18%

Thanks for the stats but it doesn't really burst my bubble .. in a poll with such a low sample size (33 people) breakdowns between those computers 8vs5vs6 etc seem pretty even to me. I have also spoken to owners of the Datamax pro that have had theirs for years with no problems...crossing my fingers that mine performs the same way :)
