For me when I sink below, it's almost hypnotic, the rhythm of my breathing, the movement of the vegetation and fish in the current. The quietness and the slowed movement. The wonder of it all, it's what I need in my life.

I got OW certified because I am a serious shell collector. Other than poke spearing a few flounders each summer and getting a handful of scallops, this remains basically my only reason to dive by myself. I got into divemastering because I used to be a teacher and it's a way to get a little bit back into education while retired. I enjoy assisting with courses but will never aspire to become an instructor (too much work, I know from observing them and 19 years of having the buck stop with me).

Now that Im fairly comfortable on scuba, also to relax.

Im a "worrier" type in general - about finances, my career, my work, my spouse, etc. etc.

When im underwater is one of the few times I completely forget about everything else for a whole hour and just focus on the moment.

An old buddy showed me once, and I do this now at least once on every dive, to close your eyes for a bit and enjoy the feeling of drifting & weightlessness - serious chillaxing

I checked for exploration, though I don't do any tech or penetrations.My favorite dives so far have been when we just swim off into the blue (read: green) and not to a specific destination.

As a kid I always wanted to be an astronaut (didn't we all?). Scuba gives me the opportunity to defy gravity and to explore a world that is so completely alien to anything I have seen before. All this and without having to sit on top of several hundred tons of explosive rocket fuel!
