I bought a Perdix after realizing I could read the screen of fellow students petrel 6 feet away easier than I could the screen of my current computer on my wrist.

Makes me laugh...no greater truth than the person who said, 'you always know there's a pilot in the room, because they tell you'. Same true here: whenever a diver asks an OC recreational question on a post, CCR divers jump in to tell you how great they and there units are. Is this because they are in love with a piece of equipment rather than diving? or just that they have to stay home rather than spending that $10,000 on diving they spent on getting to first base with CCR. See the Rebreathers for Sale page on Facebook to see the other end of that story :)

I have no idea what this means. Are you implying that the posts here weren't helpful to the OP? Or that someone just posted how great their CCR was? I didn't see anything like that, the only mention of CCRs that I see in this thread were in the context of answering the question of why people like Shearwater Computers so much. Sorry if that's annoying to you.

I use a Petrel 2 and would not trade it for any computer, originally thought I would sell it to get the Perdix right after I got my Petrel. But, that has passed. I am OC and not really "tech" until Feb of the coming year when I do my Cavern/Intro.

I started with an Suunto D4i, because "everyone does so" as I was told. Could'nt read it in the murky Dutch waters. I was advised against the SW looking for a new computer because it would be "too much computer" for me. After some 40 dives I bought a Petrel 1. Love it. Can read it in any condition, it's reliable, I can change the battery by myself and it keeps on going where my Suunto broke down after some 50 dives.

My next computer, if ever, will be a SW again. Why you ask: because it does best what it's supposed to do. Nothing more, nothing less.

Omandiver - you know that Shearwater began from the CCR world, in a relationship with ISC. I think it is nearly impossible to separate Shearwater with CCRs in discussions about either of them. At the very least, many CCR users are using Shearwaters as their controller and have a long enduring relationship with them. Of my 3 Shearwaters, 2 are DiveCAN and 1 is a SA. It has been years since I have solely used any computer but a Shearwater.

Why do I like them also? I have 4 different types of computers at home that I can lend out, 2 Oceanic Puck style, 1 Oceanic Console style and Shearwater Petrel. What do I lend out most to recreational divers with me.... the Shearwater Petrel. Why? It is very easy to use, configure and read. If I lend the console out, I have to give a lesson on what the buttons do, what it is displaying ect. With the Shearwater, I put it in Rec Mode and point at a couple of indications. There is no learning curve with the Shearwater!

Because it is designed, built, marketed, and supported for divers by divers....

I have met and dove with Bruce & Lynn, and they are terrific people and fun divers. I saw the first Shearwater about 3 weeks before the public unveiling, and it was love at first site. (Yay big numbers! Yay color!).

I've had one since near the beginning, and most importantly: IT WORKS. I can read it at any depth easily. The display is clear and can be customized to show the info you want to see.

As a company Shearwater stands behind their product like few others ever have. The support is just awesome as so many others have stated.

When my backup Suunto D3 finally dies for good, it will be replaced by whatever Shearwater is selling. Not because it will be inexpensive, but because it will be the best bang for my dollar and will last and last and last.

As for worries about when they retire, I simply have to look at my Prism Topaz and reflect on how easy it is to call Shas if I need anything.
